Using professional student services theories and concepts, performs a limited range of duties and responsibilities within a Student Life program. Works independently to provide information and interpretation of clearly defined policies, procedures and regulations. Receives direction regarding more complex issues and/or program(s). Identifies individual student needs for programs and services and advises on appropriate programs and resources.

Department Custom Scope
Under the supervision of the Director, the Program Coordinator provides individual services to undocumented/AB540/DACA students. Services may include academic needs assessment, developing individual study plans, recognizing and addressing academic and non-academic barriers to academic success, and counseling on other aspects that may affect student retention and graduation. The coordinator designs, updates, and implements campus educational programs and services specific for undocumented students. The coordinator serves as a subject matter expert pertaining to AB130/131/540, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), and federal immigration laws and policies. The coordinator provides appropriate training, workshops, and resources for administrators, faculty, staff, and students.

Key Responsibilities

Description % Time
Provides basic support services for a student program(s) and/or provides basic academic support services for a residential complex, which may include working in the following areas: a tutoring program, an on-site computer facility, a course/learning skills program, and a faculty involvement program.
  • Designs, updates, and implements campus educational programs and services specifically for undocumented students. Coordinate day-to-day activities of the Undocumented Student Programs office. Assist with programs and services in accordance to USP's mission and enhance cultural awareness on campus, including events/programs such as Undocu Ally training, Study Abroad, Undocu Circle, Butterfly Project, Undocu Scholars, etc. Coordinates programs responsive to state and federal legislation. Works closely with SAMC to manage department's branding and website.

Under the guidance of higher level specialists resolves non-complex individual cases regarding student affairs or student life.
  • Refers individuals as necessary to University and community resources. Meets with students and assists them in navigating resources as they resolve emotional, academic, interpersonal, and crisis-level issues related to their status. Serves as a resource to students in communicating legal serves. Provides counseling and guidance to incoming and prospective students.

Maintains relationships with internal and external organization stakeholders important to program success.
  • Establishes access to resources both on and off campus focused on the needs of undocumented students. Maintains effective working relationships with faculty, staff and community in support of the student experience. On-campus Partner offices include but are not limited to the following: Office of Financial Aid, Admissions, Orientation, Career Center, Registrar, Office of Study Abroad, Basic Needs, Health Services, Counseling and Psychological Services, CARE, UC Immigrant Legal Service Center, Governmental & Community Relations, Ethnic and Gender departments. Off-campus partners may include community-based organizations that provide community-based activism/action research training, skills-building, culturally rich programs and workshops, career networking and job placement.

May provide recommendations and suggestions for changes and/or development of new activities and services.
  • Participate in campus and UC-wide committees, taskforces, research advisory committees, etc. aimed at supporting undocumented students and students from mixed status families.

Provides transactional advising and guidance to student leaders participating in student government, co-curricular programs and/or organizations on non-sensitive issues. Facilitates student development in leadership, communication skills, project coordination and in establishing goals.
  • Serves as a co-adviser to PODER and any other undocumented student organizations on campus.

May supervise and train student staff and interns.
