Department Custom Scope
A unit within the portfolio of the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs, Chicano Student Programs (CSP) is an essential department that provides academic support services, mentoring/leadership development, co-and extra-curricular programming, K-14 outreach and non-academic counseling among other things, for all UC Riverside students with an emphasis on Chicano/Latino scholars. In collaboration with the Director, the Assistant Director develops, plans, implements and evaluates programs, services, initiatives and activities for Chicano Student Programs (CSP). The Assistant Director, who assumes direct responsibility for the office in the absence of the Director, functions as the key architect in the development of the programs, policies, and practices. The incumbent independently analyzes campus wide needs to develop a programmatic response, serving as a subject matter expert pertaining to Chicano/Latino undergraduate and graduate student success. In conjunction with the Director, the incumbent also implements long-range planning, leadership and outreach that increases constituent engagement with CSP and provides strategic direction for the center. The Assistant Director, in conjunction with the CSP team, collaborates with campus departments to address cross-issue social justice, diversity organizing, equity and inclusion. The Assistant Director advocates for the well-being of students, with a specific focus on Chicano/ Latino students, with an intent to advance the knowledge of and awareness of Chicano/Latino student success at a Hispanic Serving Research Institution. In collaboration with the CSP Director, the Assistant Director develops and implements partnerships to improve outcomes and provide high impact student services related to the recruitment, development, enrichment, inclusion, retention, degree attainment and enhancing the student experience of Chicano/Latino students in all disciplines across the campus. The Assistant Director will supervise the Program Coordinator.

Independently resolves the most complex individual cases regarding student affairs or student life issues.
  • Refers individuals as necessary to University and community resources. Meets with students and assists them in navigating resources as they resolve emotional, academic, interpersonal, and crisis-level issues related to their identity. ? Serves as consultant to campus departments, faculty, staff, undergraduate and graduate students on issues concerning campus climate, engagement with Chicano/Latino community, Chicano/Latino student life, and in response to anti-Chicano/Latino bias-related incidents. ? Represent the Center and the campus's Chicano/Latino community on student affairs or campus-wide committees and task forces as assigned, including the HSI committee. Provide presentations and recommendations to establish standards and guidelines across campus on issues of Chicano Latino student development, wellness, and success. Includes the perspective of Chicano Latino community needs to the decision-making process. Advocate for more equitable policies and procedures.

Develops and maintains complex or sensitive relationships with external organizations critical to program success. Represents the organizations to UC, the local community, and other relevant audiences.
  • Provides expert level knowledge regarding Chicano Latino student issues to UC, the local community, and other relevant audiences. ? Represents CSP in campus and community meetings and committees; as necessary follow-up with initiating events/programs/initatives. ? Works with Director to identify research and conference opportunities for UC Riverside students. ? Presents bilingual outreach presentations to frame and asses outreach programs. Manages outreach activities to academic departments, student support services units, and research units based on consultation with campus groups. Develop and provide workshops in Spanish, to appropriate audiences as needed. ? Establishes, maintains and coordinate student, staff, faculty and community exchanges. ? In conjunction with the Director, serves as a liaison to the UCR Chicano Latino Alumni Association, the Chicano/Latino Chancellor?s Advisory Committee, the Latino and Latin American Research Center, faculty, staff and other strategic partnerships critical to center success. ? Contributes to the planning and implementation of the overall ongoing relational marketing effort, including student relationship/engagement management, educational fairs, information sessions, mailings, promotional material, events, and various activities.

  • Assess and identifies the multifaceted and intersectional campus/community needs within scope of CSP?s goals. ? Evaluates the needs and interests of Chicano/Latino undergraduate and graduate students. Develops, implements, and assesses social, cultural, and educational development programs designed to facilitate the success and retention of Chicano Latino students. Facilitates a positive, constructive environment for Chicano Latino Students at the University. Utilizes these evaluations efforts to guide strategic planning and goal setting for the department. ? Conduct research, collect data, implement student learning outcomes, and evaluate programmatic efforts. Write quarterly progress reports for the Director and prepare correspondence on behalf of the Director. ? Implements recruitment, retention and post-graduation strategies to increase Chicano/Latino undergraduate and graduate degree enrollment and attainment. ? Collaborate with Director to set long-term strategic planning objectives? initiate, organize, and implement programs primarily targeting students, staff, faculty, graduates, and academic departments based on need.

Manages a program of providing counseling, guidance and development to student leaders or student government. Oversee(s) a program(s) and service(s) of diverse complexity and scope.
  • Working closely with CSP Director, plan, develop, and implement a comprehensive plan of large to small scale special events for special opportunities to deliver the mission of CSP to the campus. Events may be as large as public/private lectures, seminars, workshops, and donor cultivation events or as small as a luncheon or dinner. Research, write and/or summarize biographical information of participants for public/private lectures, seminars, workshops, etc. Duties include collecting participant data and analyze results to be used for future events. ? Plan and implement regular leadership development activities for all current and potential student leaders in Chicano/Latino serving organizations. Assistant Director will assess the impact and effectiveness of the activities. Identify, develop, coordinate, facilitate and evaluate academic and support programs which will improve outcomes related to recruitment, retention & time-to-degree for Chicano/Latino students. ? Coordinate, facilitate, and implement components of established/assigned special events programs. Analyze and evaluate the effectiveness CSP?s educational programs and implement changes based on assessment. Conduct needs assessments regarding programs mentioned above and implement them. Initiate and coordinate with UC Riverside staff associations and student organizations, and with faculty, events, trainings, speakers, and community organization involvement. Identify new and emerging programming opportunities. ? Advise Diversity Council representative and ad-hoc center committees on program planning and fundraising. ? Manage $20K programming budget. Ensure that optimal and timely use of funds are consistent with project goals and pertinent regulations, as well as monitor spending to ensure that expenditures are in line with the educational program budget. Collaborate with the Director to develop and manage the educational program operating budget.

May supervise clerical and/or student staff.
  • Supervises professional staff member, including overseeing the performance management process and providing the direct report guidance; oversight for meeting campus policies and procedures; and creating professional development opportunities. ? Provide day-to-day oversight and direct the activities of student staff, interns and mentor volunteers who have various programming, education, and administrative responsibilities. Responsible for coordinating and analyzing all aspects of CSP?s integrated academic intern training, leadership development and social justice practicum, including but is not limited to: Conceptualize and draft promotional copy or program materials as requested, proofread printed and electronic material, ensuring its timely production and distribution. ? Coordinate with the student leaders and principal members of all Chicano/Latino serving groups and organizations on campus to ensure appropriate timing of events and activities, attention to emerging issues, and development of leader transitions. ? Mentor the Center's student staff, interns, volunteers, and junior staff.
