Department Custom Scope
Under the general direction of the Chemical Hygiene Officer (CHO)/Laboratory Safety Supervisor (LSS), the incumbent will support the CHO/Laboratory Safety Supervisor in maintaining and implementing the comprehensive campus laboratory safety program related to general lab safety, chemical hygiene/safety, process safety, safety engineering, chemical engineering, physical hazards, etc. Conducts laboratory safety evaluations, hazard assessments; identifies and and recommends corrective action; work with laboratory staff and departments in implementation of corrective actions. The incumbent will work with the CHO/LSS in developing criteria for using extremely hazardous chemicals and high-risk research equipment and research processes. The incumbent will actively investigate and promote continuous process improvement efforts at all levels of education and research safety.

Inspects, investigates incidents and complaints, and recommends corrective action as needed.
  • Conducts evaluations in order to identify, evaluate, and correct potential radiological, chemical, biological, physical and general safety hazards in facilities where research is conducted, research and teaching laboratories and laboratory support facilities.

Develops, implements, and monitors environmental and safety programs, systems, procedures, and training in one or more of the following fields: industrial hygiene, environmental health, pest control, occupational safety, ergonomics, laboratory safety, biosafety, controlled substances, environmental protection, fire safety, radiation safety, hazardous materials control and hazardous waste management (may include shipping).
  • Develops written programs and guidance materials summarizing complex regulations for application in a research environment, which include developing and maintaining the Process Safety, Toxic Gases, and High Hazards programs and related guidance materials, and monitors compliance with the Shop Safety program.

Performs outreach and communication to organization within relevant field.
  • Actively engage all levels of the academic and research enterprise including College Deans, Chairs, and Principal Investigators (PIs) to promote laboratory safety concepts.

Performs technical work related to field(s) of expertise.
  • Reviews laboratory set-up, complex research protocols, and risk assessments and include making recommendations to the PI and researchers for improving safety and security associated with a specific project work.

Designs new and/or recommends improvements to existing processes and procedures.
  • Reviews existing standard operation procedures and assists PIs and researchers in developing new standard operating procedures for safe process and handling of hazardous materials and equipment.

Drafts reports and other documentation, including use of relevant scientific data.
  • Drafts and maintains required recordkeeping and documentation of findings and corrective actions as part of the laboratory safety evaluations and incident investigations.

Monitors compliance and may serve as organization liaison with regulatory agencies.

Provides training within several EH&S areas.
  • Provide instruction and guidance to laboratory personnel and Principal Investigators (PIs) so they may work safely with hazardous materials and equipment, and assist with EH&S formal lab safety training efforts.

Creates and adjusts methodologies to meet changing regulatory and scientific environment.
  • Reviews and maintains knowledge/expertise on existing/proposed changes in all regulations; Interprets and develops/revises guidance and standard operating procedures to align with relevant laws, regulations, codes and standards, including making recommendations for work environment changes based on interpretations and principles of laboratory and safety best practices.

Participates in the incident response system, responding as requested to after-hours incidents that require joint cooperation between Fire, Police, Facilities Services, EH&S and other units. Works occasional evenings/nights, weekends, and holidays.
