Provides advice to students on the full range of requirements for a department, college, or school with a wide variety of course requirements. Recommends solutions to progression and requirement issues. Advice may include not-clearly-defined programs such as independent study programs, interdisciplinary programs, or multiple programs. Works independently under general supervision.

Department Custom Scope
Provides department and college level advising service for a subset of the college's majors and may function as a Lead Advisor. Leads the coordination of one or more student success activities or processes supporting the advising function; the student success activities, which are broad in scope and complexity, have impact beyond assigned caseload. Uses independent judgement to identify and resolve issues with broad implications. Regularly engages in analysis and problem solving on critical issues. Functions as an expert and resource, providing consultation to Director, Associate Dean, and college departments. Serves as resource for Advisors, supporting their overall development and on-the-job training. May create and implement activities, resources, or processes with impact beyond assigned caseload.

Key Responsibilities

Provides advice and assistance to students on all aspects of their academic experience, including progression and requirement matters for the department/school/college.
  • Provides department and college level advising service; uses independent judgement to solve problems, create and streamline processes in support of efficiency and student success; functions as an expert and resource, providing reliable consultation to students, faculty, parents, and leadership; functions as team player and resource within unit, supporting training and professional growth; initiates, implements or supports student success activities, resources, or processes with impact beyond assigned caseload.

Leads one or more student success activity that supports student success or development, or a process that supports the advising function. The incumbent's role is complex and has broad impact within the unit beyond assigned responsibilities. Current areas of independent work include: (a) student success activities--leads or co-leads coordination of learning communities, freshmen advising seminar, peer mentoring, transfer transition programming, new student orientations, major/cohort based workshops, change of major advising, etc.; (b) recruitment and admissions--coordinates BCOE's participation in campus-wide recruitment efforts, assists evaluation of exceptions to transfer admission criteria, develops and manages communication campaigns targeting unique populations, etc.; (c) curriculum and course scheduling--supports curriculum planners/schedulers in cohort progression analysis, projecting course demand in alignment with department resources, develops form course plans supporting timely degree progress, etc.; (d) staff and resource development--leads training of new staff; develops and enhances resources supporting the advising function i.e. presentations, website content, etc.; leads collaboration with computer programmers in design of online advising tools; (e) independently identifies and resolves issues with larger implications; functioning with a significant amount of autonomy, investigates issues and opportunities, explores possibilities and chooses best courses action; (f) lead initiatives partnering with Director, Associate Dean, Registrar's Office, or Undergraduate Education, etc.

Confirms that students have met requirements for degree completion when there are no clear precedents or articulations, such as interdisciplinary programs or when transfer work is involved.
  • This includes routine monitoring of students? academic progress term to term, ensuring compliance with major/college/university academic policies and degree requirements; responding to petitions of academic policy, rendering decisions or referring to appropriate decider, and noting student records; certification of degree completion.

Participates in planning academic curriculum in collaboration with chair/dean and faculty, and with other departments, to ensure student's progress through course sequences, avoid conflicts, and ensure compliance with organization-wide policies.
