Custom Scope
Utilizing a theoretical understanding of career development, advises students/alumni on a full range of career processes, including individual or group advising/coaching, career planning, setting career goals, decision making, and improving job search competencies. Provides a holistic approach to student/alumni career counseling, modifies workshops and presentations as necessary; OR maintains relationships with potential employers, school admissions representatives, and other organizations to establish contacts to meet the career needs of students. Performs independently, but may receive guidance in developing new career advising/coaching services and Counsels undergraduate and graduate students and alumni on career options and opportunities, including customized services for specific populations.

Department Custom Scope
Under general supervision, the incumbent is to serve as part of the Student and College Engagement team. The incumbent is assigned primary responsibility for career counseling and career readiness programs that support natural and agricultural sciences (CNAS) students. The incumbent develops, improves, and leverages relationships with Deans, Associate Deans, Department Chairs, Faculty, and Students Organizations to accomplish career readiness goals and objectives. Improves and maintains relationships with key employers. Develops and leverages relationships with natural and agricultural sciences alumni.

Key Responsibilities

Counsels undergraduate and graduate students and alumni on career options and opportunities, including customized services for specific populations.
  • As a subject matter expert for the College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences (CNAS), provides targeted career counseling to this population. Identifies personal crisis situations and refers client to appropriate resources.

Modifies and conducts workshops and presents programs to meet the needs of students and staff.
  • With a keen understanding of student career readiness needs, develops and implements workshops and information sessions; to include coordination with key stakeholders as appropriate.

Provides guidance to departments/colleges/schools on providing resources to meet students' career needs.
  • Builds and maintains a collaborative relationship with the College of Natural & Agricultural Sciences to ensure high-level career readiness outcomes for students. May also serve in a leadership role for researching, developing, and implementing customized career programs to enrich career readiness skills. Assists with college assessment initiatives, including the First Destinations Survey.

Helps clients identify their interests, values, skills, and personalities, and understand how these factors relate to academic/career satisfaction and choices.

  • The UCR Career Center utilizes the Strong Interest Inventory, the Myers Briggs Type Indicator, Focus 2, CareerLeader, and Strengths.

Helps with decision making, goal setting, action planning, and identifying internal/external obstacles to obtaining goals.

Researches and organizes economic and employment trend data, and designs materials for presentation to students and organization professionals.
  • Researches, evaluates, and updates written and electronic career and educational resources. Presents industry data and trends to students during career counseling appointments and workshops.

Develops and implements marketing and outreach programs to promote programs and services.
  • Work with Student Affairs Marketing and Communications (SAMC) and CNAS Marketing to assist in the development and implementation of targeted marketing and communications for student and/or employer audiences.

Maintains and enhances relationships with corporations and other organizations to develop and modify potential employer resources, and promote external relations with the organization relating to career services for students and alumni.

This position may also serve in a leadership role for researching, developing, and implementing customized Career Center programs aimed at targeted student populations.

Strong knowledge of career development theories, adult development theory, counseling process, career coaching techniques, career decision making, learning styles, and job search techniques. Required
