Assignments are typically complex or large and include controversial and/or politically sensitive issues or content.

Department Custom Scope
Under the direction of the Assistant Vice Chancellor of Governmental & Community Relations, the Assistant Director of Advocacy and Institutional Relations supports the department's charge to build relationships, enhance the University's presence, and generates support for UC Riverside's mission of education, research and public service. Major areas of focus and responsibility include regional and state advocacy, governmental and institutional relations, outreach, communications, public policy analysis, program and event coordination and research.

Projects include government and/or industry lobbying efforts.
  • Actively participates in government and/or industry lobbying efforts. May directly oversee planning, development and administration of a year-round legislative advocacy program to advance the University of California with federal, state and local lawmakers and elected officials.

May oversee all aspects of complex external relations programs, projects and events, including coordinating special programs and overseeing production of audio/visual or written and visual materials.
  • Participates in initiatives, events and committees in order to represent departmental and UCR interests. Directs, cultivates and coordinates the support of volunteers (grassroots and grasstops) to advance advocacy efforts with local, state and federal legislators, policy makers and opinion leaders.

Analyzes, summarizes and/or reviews data, reporting findings, interpreting results and/or making recommendations.
  • Analyzes, summarizes and/or reviews legislation, public policy analysis and data to report key findings, interprets results and/or make recommendations on campus impact.

Monitors and interprets federal and state legislation and/or proposed actions by city government and advises senior management of potential campus and/or medical center impact.

Represents the campus and/or medical center with federal, state and local government units, in the media or with private organizations.
  • The Assistant Director will help develop, foster, and maintain campus partnerships with government officials, agencies and their staffs, the private sector, local industry, and non-profit organizations. Ability to build coalitions and collaborate with regional constituencies. Identifies opportunities to strengthen campus outreach and education. Analyzes and updates contact databases. Independently assesses community interests as they relate to UCR and identifies where commonality of interests exists.

With emphasis on UCR's greater regional and diverse community constituencies, actively engages with Inland Empire and regional partners to advance advocacy goals. Advises Assistant Vice Chancellor on emerging issues and opportunities that may impact the campus.

Collaborates with Campus Communications to generate content, update and maintains GCR web presence, including continuous updates to web and social media content.

Quickly and appropriately identifies, addresses, and mitigates unforeseen and/or rapidly unfolding events that may negatively impact relationships between the campus and/or medical center and various constituencies, keeping senior management appropriately advised and notified.
  • Monitors and interprets federal, state legislation and proposed actions by local government(s) in order to advise colleagues and senior management of proposed impact.
