Department Custom Scope
In support of the Office of Technology Partnerships and the Small Business Development Center, the Entrepreneur-in-Residence (EIR) will support the University's efforts to encourage technology commercialization and creation of startups. The incumbent will serve as a coach and mentor in key start up activities related to team formation, marketing strategies, business development and fundraising, and support the overall commercialization efforts of the University. The EIR will provide guidance on how to apply to related Technology Partnership programs; play a support role in vetting and evaluating companies seeking resources through Technology Partnership programs; advise the Office of Technology Commercialization and Associate Vice Chancellor, Technology Partnerships on approaches to structure and fund UCR startup companies in related areas; assist early stage companies and teams in developing commercialization strategies and provide expert advice on industry-university strategic partnerships; and serve as a coach and mentor in key start up activities related to team formation, marketing strategies, business development and fundraising in support of the overall commercialization efforts of the University.

Experience mentoring start up companies on topics related to HR, including Leadership and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). Preferred
Experience communicating in Spanish in a professional and/or academic environment. Preferred
Experience mentoring start up companies related to small business leadership and/or small business finance. Preferred
Experience in one or more of the following fields: Software-as-a-Service, SBIR/STTR submissions, transportation and logistics, healthcare disparities, materials science, data analytics, quantum computing, agriculture operations, animal health, clean natural resources, or energy. Preferred

Key Responsibilities

Builds and cultivates relationships and ongoing communications with industry partners. Identifies ways to improve the relationship to meet partner needs and achieve alliance goals. Answers questions regarding financial and contractual obligations.
  • Mentors teams in key startup activities related to team formation, marketing, business development, partnership, manufacturing strategy, fund raising, etc. Coaches teams to deliver investor ready presentations in preparation of the showcase of UCR projects and companies. Establishes and tracks POC milestones for all teams. Helps manage fund disbursements according to milestones. Meets with teams, establishes and tracks milestones quarterly and prepares them for Showcase event. Advises campus researchers on issues related to industry engagement. Educates researchers about the market's demands, identifies target audiences for campus inventions and research, and helps craft compelling presentations of complex research for business and investor audiences.

Plans and implements proactive outreach to potential industry partners, tailoring communications to explain how a strategic alliance with the University research program will serve their unique and custom needs. Facilitates outreach activities and bridges potential areas of interest.
  • Facilitates connections between faculty, students entrepreneurs with resources to advance commercialization of their research. Supports Associate Directors of Regional and International Engagement with developing high level collaborations with companies, foundations and individuals in life sciences. Supports identification of potential mentors, CEOs and investors for teams.

Engages prospective partnerships and coordinates meetings with university research program leadership to pitch forming an industry partnership.
  • Identifies early stage companies within the University with high potential for commercialization. Provides guidance on how to apply to various Technology Partnership programs. Plays support role in vetting and evaluating companies seeking resources from OTP programs. Advises OTC and AVCTP on approaches to structure and fund UCR startup companies in related areas. Assists early stage companies and teams in developing commercialization strategies.

Analyzes partner and industry needs, recommending a strategy to expand the industry alliance program, services, and trainings. Launches improvements to programs through creating timelines and leading regular meetings to ensure project successfully meets goals.

Expands existing partner agreements through analyzing partner needs and recommending ideas to grow the relationship. Implements initiatives to maximize the relationship.

Effectively communicates and reports program status, direction, and recommendations to Industry Alliance Management and the University Executive Team. Coordinates with central office Industry Relations staff to ensure synergy of efforts and outcomes, and avoidance of duplicative efforts.
  • Uses Basecamp and/or Ideator for tracking activity, communications with teams and metrics collection.
