Department Custom Scope
Under the supervision of the Associate University Librarian for the Digital Library, the Digitization Services Specialist uses a range of scanning technologies and techniques to digitize a wide variety of library special and general collection materials. The position is also responsible for post-processing, quality control and digital asset management of content produced or received by the Digitization Services unit. Working closely with key library departments, this position collaborates on developing workflow processes, documentation and budgets for assigned projects. The Digitization Services Specialist also works with external digitization vendors and coordinates external scanning jobs. This position additionally provides support, assistance and advice in the use of digitization equipment and software to faculty and staff; performs routine maintenance on various systems and equipment such as cameras, lighting systems, computers and digitization equipment; and trains and supervises student workers, as assigned. The position also participates in library standing committees, contributes to the development of new library programs, such as digital initiatives and digital scholarship services, and may also participate in writing grants and funding proposals. This position is designated as a Mandated Reporter and will be required to complete trainings and comply with CANRA.

Applies professional project management and IT concepts and department/unit and campus, medical center or Office of the President policies and procedures to manage complex projects.
  • Creates digitization documentation including guidelines, policies and procedures, best practices, and relevant reports and updates. Also monitors library websites and works with Cyberinfrastructure team and library stakeholders to ensure that the library website, staff wiki, and digital collections websites are organized systematically and kept up to date.

Implements the project management process in support of products and services involving departmental or cross-functional teams. Monitors and reports on project progress from initiation through delivery, including oversight of system integration, project and campus, medical center or Office of the President communications, interaction with vendors and managing risk. Creates project proposals and reports.
  • Manages the Library's digitization program including conversion of collections from analog to digital format, management of born digital assets, adheres to digital library standards and best practices, and implementation of technologies related to the management and dissemination of digital content such as digital asset management systems, institutional repository, and online exhibition tools.

Assembles and directs moderate to large project teams, designs project plans and schedules and monitors budget and resources. Directs the activities of the project with the goal of completing the project on schedule and within budget constraints.
  • Assesses the overall digitization needs, resources, scheduling, budget, and priorities of assigned projects. Consults with the Cyberinfrastructure department on areas requiring software development and technical infrastructure. Coordinates digital asset management and publishing with the California Digital Library, and participates in regular CDL meetings and conference calls.

Performs in-house digitization work using library scanning equipment and cameras. Performs equipment and software configuration and maintenance. Maintains currency on digitization technologies and methods.

Performs routine file management and Digital Asset Management system imports and maintenance. Coordinates finished image uploads to Calisphere and library Content Management Systems. Works closely with California Digital Library staff.
