Department Custom Scope
Under the direction of the Department Chair, the Research and Development Engineer 3 (Machine Shop Manager) will oversee the teaching and research of the Department of Mechanical Engineering Machine Shop laboratory facility. The duties include: (1) training shop users, including faculty and students (post-doctoral, graduate, and undergraduate,) in the safe use of machining equipment, (2) providing engineering services to faculty and students including but not limited to the design, fabrication, and testing of scientific research apparatus, instrumentation systems, and processes and utilizing solid modeling and other computer-based engineering modeling and design programs; (3) serving as an engineering consultant to the faculty and students on matters related to the design and fabrication of such apparatus, systems, and processes: (4) fabricating and repairing teaching equipment; and (5) supervising the safe operation of a full-service Machine Shop, a facility which is critically important to the College of Engineering and its research objectives.

Key Responsibilities

Description % Time
Provides full range of professional engineering services to research projects; meets with research staff in the design and development phase.
  • The incumbent will provide training in the operation of general machining equipment and tooling, emphasizing safety & machining skills. The incumbent will maintain a student training program & appropriate testing procedures to ensure that all shop users are properly trained in the safe & effective use of machining equipment & the shop facilities. The incumbent will maintain records documenting the training of shop users. The incumbent ensures all safety procedures are observed.

The incumbent will provide engineering and consultant services to faculty and students (post-doctoral, graduate, and undergraduate), including, but not limited to, the design, fabrication, and testing of scientific research apparatus, instrumentation systems, and processes. In performing these tasks, the incumbent will apply knowledge of engineering design and fabrication, including, but not limited to, knowledge of material selection, tolerances, fabrication processes, and the design of standard machine components. The incumbent will also use computer-aided design and manufacturing software for these tasks. The incumbent will analyze the feasibility of engineering designs and be accountable for completing projects within time and financial constraints. The incumbent will serve as an engineering liaison and consultant in departmental relationships with investigators, vendors, and other campus requestors. The incumbent will also provide mechanical repair and maintain various scientific apparatus and instrumentation, including custom-made and commercially purchased scientific apparatus and other scientific and instructional mechanical devices.

  • The incumbent will supervise & maintain the operation of the Dept. Machine Shop. Responsibilities include: ordering/maintaining adequate inventory of stocks/materials; maintaining/repairing equipment; estimating job costs; prioritizing jobs & managing workloads; maintaining administrative records, such as labor & material costs, and providing billing information on a monthly basis; following university guidelines safe use and disposal of shop chemicals; providing equipment improvements ideas.

May provide engineering information and advice to Principal Investigators and/or other faculty and research personnel with administrative responsibility for the research program or teaching facility.
  • The incumbent will coordinate with instructors that require machine shop support (e.g., ME175B/C) to assist in the supervision of students and ensure the safe use of the tools and equipment when needed.
