Department Custom Scope
The Student Health Center Clinical Nurse 3 assists health care providers in the safe delivery of health/medical records. The Student Health Center Clinical Nurse provides patient education by modifying or removing health related barriers to learning, promoting optimal wellness. They enable individuals to make informed decisions about health related concerns and empowering students to be self directed and well informed consumers of health care services. The Student Health Center Clinical Nurse provides emergent/urgent care necessary to meet the needs of the UC patient.

A Diploma or Associate degree with two years of clinical experience; or a Baccalaureate degree in Nursing with one year of clinical experience; a Master's degree in Nursing with six months of clinical experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Required

Key Responsibilities

Treatment Evaluates charts and orders by the provider. Follows orders by the providers for specific injections or treatments. Gives immunizations, using standard protocols; gives advice to patients regarding the need and schedule for immunizations, and refers patients to providers as needed. Assists with calls or follow-up letters to patients when needed, gives health advice to patients in the clinic and documents that interaction in the chart. Cares for patients in the treatment room for emergency care and in the observation room. Administers antigens, immunizations and medications with all precautions and skills expected of registered nurses when such orders are indicated by the provider on direct order or on written basis. Arranges for transportation or follow-up care at another facility as needed. Makes sure all charges are placed in computer in tracking slip and that patient is instructed to stop at the front desk to arrange for payment. Refers patients to insurance as necessary. On occasion, may assist the provider. Provides students with adequate explanations of the activities and procedures with respect to examinations. Assists in monitoring and tracking of lab results.

Triage Sees patients who have registered in the triage office and determines the best plan of care for students. Coordinates schedules to maximize efficiency and flow in alignment with Student Health Services policy. Manages a variety of common presenting issues using standardized procedures. Evaluates and treats patients as per protocols written by providers and under the supervision of providers. Documents each patient encounter in the patient's EMR, including assessment and disposition. Anticipates Physician needs.

Travel-Medicine/Immunizations Clinic Reviews each patient's immunization record and status and advises on any immunizations needed. Reviews each patient's past reaction to immunizations and their general health status. Documents all immunizations and prescriptions given and information discussed in the patient's electronic medical record. Consults with or refers to a physician regarding issues outside the scope of a travel-medicine nurse.

Perform Special Diagnostic Procedures Performs special diagnostic procedures such as: spirometry, visual acuity, audiometry, electrocardiography, etc. Prepares the reports for the provider.

Evaluates and treat patients as per protocols written by providers and under the supervision of providers. May organize and participate in specialty clinics, e.g. immunization clinics, health fairs, and women's health sessions. Takes an active role supporting the Student Health Services missions related to outreach, accreditation (AAAHC), etc

Skills and knowledge according to the standards of practice in the local medical community and in accordance with the laws of the State of California, as contained in the Nurse Practice Act of the Board of Registered Nursing of the State of California. Required

Previous experience in travel medicine. Preferred
Strong background in women's health. Preferred
International Safe Transit Association Certification. Preferred
Current knowledge of health hazards in different areas of travel and the appropriate precautions indicated. Preferred
Current knowledge of immunizations and their importance in various travel and domestic situations, their contraindications, side effects, dose schedules, etc. Preferred
