Department Custom Scope
Under general supervision of the Scientist Specialist CL, this position works with other members of the lab team to process patients, collect blood and urine specimens, and processing specimens for send outs to our reference lab. This position performs phlebotomy, specimen processing duties and efficient venous and/or skin punctures on students by following standard phlebotomy methods and those established by the Student Health Services Laboratory, and helps assist in the set up of CLIA-waived tests. This position has direct involvement in quality assurance studies, greater quality compliance record keeping, and maintaining supplies. This position may include providing clinical resource leadership/training in phlebotomy and/or specimen processing. This is a one year per diem position, with the possibility of extension based on available funding at the time. Per Diem Appointments may be scheduled on a pre-scheduled basis or as needed on a day-to-day basis or called off from a pre-established schedule as determined by the University.

Key Responsibilities

Description % Time
Performs and completes with accuracy and within established time frame any lab assignment duties and/or projects assigned by the Supervisor. Determines that tests are properly ordered. Performs accessioning, operating and maintaining laboratory equipment, troubleshooting specimen/test order problems. Prepare blood and urine samples for testing. Set-up CLIA waived tests. Set-up cultures, stain slides. Perform routine daily quality control and assist in recordkeeping. Trains newly hired lab assistants, and fulfills an on-going lead role.

Order and maintain lab supplies and in-house supplies as needed. Advise patients of proper specimen collection. Complete lab request forms and test requisitions for reference lab. Assists in monitoring all lab staff's proper disposition of lab results and documentation. Participates directly in data retrieval and preparation of QA reports. Formats, updates, and maintains charts and logs.

Perform skilled, efficient venous and/or skin punctures on patients following phlebotomy methods established by the lab.
