Custom Scope
Utilizing a theoretical understanding of career development, advises students/alumni on a full range of career processes, including individual or group advising/coaching, career planning, setting career goals, decision making, and improving job search competencies. Provides a holistic approach to student/alumni career counseling, modifies workshops and presentations as necessary; OR maintains relationships with potential employers, school admissions representatives, and other organizations to establish contacts to meet the career needs of students. Performs independently, but may receive guidance in developing new career advising/coaching services and Counsels undergraduate and graduate students and alumni on career options and opportunities, including customized services for specific populations.

Department Custom Scope
The Career Advisor will oversee medical specialty student interest groups to integrate activities into career advising programming and services. Serve as the lead for career advising workshops, seminars, mock interviews, panels, and other career advising programs. Oversee and manage the production of career advising newsletter and residency digest including researching, evaluating, and selecting materials and articles to include. Serve as the lead to collect, track, and monitor student completion of career advising requirements and interpret and analyze career advising inventories submitted by students to inform programming and career advising counseling sessions with students. Oversee the accountability structure for the career advisors that collects, tracks, and monitors student engagement with the advisors and produce quarterly reports to the Senior Associate Dean for Student Affairs and Associate Dean for Student Affairs. Oversee and maintain the content of the career advising website. Oversee and maintain the data infrastructure for program evaluate data as well as analyze data in order to generate presentations and recommendations on improvement and determine effective practices. Works with the Student Affairs team to help organize and carry out major events and activities such as Residency Match, SOAP, Recruitment Day, Orientation Week, graduation ceremonies and various Medical Student Life events.

Provides oversight of student interest groups/organizations related to career specialties and sub specialties. Provides day-to-day administration to medical student organizations including coordination of speakers, events and other logistics in coordination with the career advising team. Advises students on complex and sensitive issues. Guides students in interactions with faculty, mentors and leaders, and represents students on these issues when appropriate. Coaches students on communication and leadership skills.

Uses standard quantitative and qualitative assessments to help clients assess career goals.
  • Collects, tracks and monitors student completion of career advising requirements including the submission of M1, M2, M3 and M4 career advising inventories, attendance at workshops and panels, receiving and assessing career advising resources and materials. Reports data to the Career Service Specialist, Residency Development Specialist, and Associate Dean for Student Affairs to support creating tailored career advice to individual students based on their responses to the inventories. Produces quarterly reports on the status of students' completion of requirements and attendance at career advising events to ensure students receive and use career advising resources to identify their medical specialty interests and career goals.

Helps with decision making, goal setting, action planning, and identifying internal/external obstacles to obtaining goals.
  • Serves as the lead for program evaluation and analysis. Creates evaluations for career advising events and activities. Interprets and makes recommendations for improvement to the Career Advising Team and identifies issues and develops solutions and/or interventions to resolve them. Creates and maintains a data infrastructure to store and organize data as well as produce routing reports that display data to assist the Career Advising Team in monitoring and tracking in meeting goals and satisfaction of students with services and support. Assists with reports requested by the College, University or external agencies.

Modifies and conducts workshops and presents programs to meet the needs of students and staff.
  • Responsible for implementing, managing, monitoring and evaluating programs that will allow students to explore medical specialties and opportunities for career and professional development. Refers students to appropriate resources including SOM Department Chairs, Career/Specialty Advisors, Interest Group Faculty Advisors, Careers in Medicine mentors and alumni. Develops and facilitates individual and group sessions, workshops related to career development and specialty selection. Oversees, plans, coordinates and initiates career services (workshops, seminars, publications and events) designed to monitor and support the career development of medical students. Maintains and reviews Careers in Medicine dashboard to evaluate students use of resources. Oversees the implementation of events that focus on Career Development (Physician Mentor dinner, speed mentoring, special lectures, specialty round tables, CV workshops and 3rd year medical student advising series). Maintains confidentiality of interactions with students.

Collects, tracks and monitors Clinical Faculty Career Advisors required activity to ensure they meet with their career advisors and cover required contents with each student assigned to them. Produces quarterly reports on the status of the Clinical Faculty Career Advisors completion of meeting with students and covering required content.

Counsels undergraduate and graduate students and alumni on career options and opportunities, including customized services for specific populations.
  • Provides supplemental career advising to students on foundational career advising information such as Association of American Medical Schools (AAMC), Careers in Medicine website, UCR School of Medicine Career Advising Four Year Roadmap and resources available on UCR SOM Career Advising website. Compiles UCR SOM specific data to help inform future cohorts and Career Advisors on trends related to specialty and match for SOM. Reports data to Senior Associate Dean of Student Affairs and Associate Dean of Student Affairs to support the creation and modification of career development programs and services. Provides support as needed for regular, military, early and couples matches. Provides support as needed to the creation of the Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE) and Supplemental Offer and Acceptance Program (SOAP) for unmatched students.

  • Oversees Career Advising website to ensure current and relevant content and resources to help students understand which medical specialties may be a good fit for them based on their interests, personality and other factors. Manages and oversees the career advising newsletter and residency digest to provide up-to-date information and resources. Interprets and presents data from NRMP, AAMC and other national organizations regarding medical specialty information on UCR SOM website, newsletter and digest.

Assists in serving as liaison and resource for mentors, advisors, alumni and medical students for Career Development, Medical Student Council and specialty medical student interest groups. Evaluates student career development progress and refers students to appropriate Department Chairs, SOM administrators and Graduate Medical Education administrators for strategic advising if needed.

Oversees the collection, tracking and monitoring of required Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE) components and other residency requirements (i.e. CV and personal statements) including the scheduling of MSPE student review appointments.

Works with the Student Affairs team to organize and carry out the major events and activities, including but not limited to, Recruitment Day, Orientation Week and Graduation ceremonies, as well as wellness events.
