Department Custom Scope
The incumbent will assist physicians and professional nursing staff in providing care and treatment of patients. To assist front office staff as needed in patient registration, appointments, and record keeping. To maintain and clean equipment, to keep an inventory of supplies, and be responsible for ordering supplies. This is a one year, two per diem position posting, with the possibility of extension with availability of funding at that time.

Key Responsibilities

Description % Time
Assisting with physicians and professional nursing staff in providing care and treatment of patients. 1. Determining the chief complaint and documenting it in the patient chart with close attention to accurate use of medical terms, correct spelling and legibility. 2. Preparing patients for exam with correct positioning and draping 3. Taking accurate, careful readings of vital signs as indicated and recording them in the chart. 4. Assisting with treatments and exams, including but not limited to: gynecological exams; minor dressing changes; certain immunizations, ear lavage, fitting of crutches, splints, and slings; screening eye exams; specimen collection and transport, peak flow and O2 saturation. 5. Reviewing charts for lab and x-ray results, correct completion of all lab and x-ray, consultation requests, and accurate filing of all chart information.

Assisting front office and insurance staff with updating records in charts and using correct billing codes. Recording treatment in patient management system using correct ICD9 billing codes and attributing treatment to the correct provider.

Inventory Control 1. Clean exam rooms, work stations, and equipment as necessary. 2. Stock rooms with all needed supplies. 3. Clean and sterilize equipment, using the sterilizer or chemicals. 4. Maintain observation room beds, changing linens and preparing laundry for pick up (maintain a laundry inventory).

Knowledge/Skill/Ability Requirement
Knowledge of correct usage and spelling of medical terminology and medical equipment. Required
Ability to work quickly and accurately and to communicate and interact cooperative with patients and all personnel in facility. Required
Respect for patients with diverse cultural backgrounds and life-styles; ability to maintain strict confidentiality. Required
Familiarity with universal precautions, handling of biohazardous waste, specimen identification and transport. Required
Familiarity with the fundamentals of asepsis and sterile technique, basic bacteriology and the relationship of bacteria to infection and disease control. Required
Ability to perform duties in a professional manner and put patient at ease. Required
Ability to identify potential risk management concerns and provide options to resolve. Required
Ability to use good judgment in deciding when to seek clarification and assistance and be able to handle many tasks at once, judging what tasks may take priority. Required
Ability to safely lift and move 40 lbs; to stand on feet for long periods of time; work alone for periods that may exceed the normal 8 hour work day, with variable break and lunch times. Clinical duties require a reasonable level of manual dexterity and visual and auditory acuity. Required
Must have written evidence to validate training and competency as a medical assistant (i.e., certification of completion of a medical assistant training program, or a letter from supervising physician/podiatrist). Required
Knowledge of and proficiency in using a PC. Required
