Department Custom Scope
To assist physicians and professional nursing staff in providing care and treatment of patients. To maintain and clean equipment. May be utilized in clinic covering Medical Assistant staff shortages. This posting is for two per diem positions and will be for a year long appointment. Per Diem Appointments may be scheduled on a pre-scheduled basis or as needed on a day-to-day basis or called off from a pre-established schedule as determined by the University. The position may be extended if there is available funding at that time. |

Preparing for Patient Care Under the direction of the physician or nurse practitioner, the LVN is responsible for preparing patients for the visit with the provider. 1. Recognizes symptomology of common medical illnesses and emergent medical conditions. 2. Applies protocol for encountering infectious clients. 3. Applies protocol for emergent medical conditions. 4. Determines the chief complaint from the patient and records it accurately in the medical record. 5. Prepares patients for exam with correct positioning and draping. 6. Accurately takes and records vital signs in patient medical record. 7. Assists with treatment and exams, including but not limited to gynecological exams. | 35 |
Delivering patient care 1. Administers prescribed procedures under provider direction including dressing changes, hot and cold applications, ear lavage, fitting of crutches, splints and slings, screening eye exams, specimen collection and transport, peak flow and O2 saturation. 2. May administer intramuscular, subcutaneous and oral medications per Student Health Services policy. Performs venipuncture adhering to all OSHA PPE safety requirements. 3. May start and monitor IV's according to SHS policy. 4. Monitors patients for change in condition and reaction to medications. 5. Provides patient education regarding common conditions per provider direction. | 35 |
Post visit/care routine follow up 1. Reviews charts for lab and X-ray results, correct completion of all lab and X-ray work, consultation requests, and accurate filing of all chart information. 2. Assists with refills of patient prescriptions by obtaining medical record, notifying physician and recontacting patient with instructions. 3. Makes appropriate annotations in the patient chart, maintaining accurate and complete records of nursing care. 4. Under direction of medical provider, makes appropriate annotation in patient management system using accurate ICD-9 codes. 5. Coordinates flu clinics and any other injections clinic as directed by supervisor. 6. Vaccinates patients who come in for routine appointments, as needed. 7. Assist RNs in selected treatments and vaccinations while staying within scope of LVN practice. | 25 |
