Generic Scope
Technical leader with a high degree of knowledge in the overall field and recognized expertise in specific areas; problem-solving frequently requires analysis of unique issues/problems without precedent and/or structure. May manage programs that include formulating strategies and administering policies, processes, and resources; functions with a high degree of autonomy.

Custom Scope
Uses advanced technical skills related to learning management systems, multimedia design, assessment systems, communication tools, streaming media platforms, and multimedia creative applications to meet unique and often "new" requirements related to online course design and development. Analysis of project requirements requires in-depth evaluation and understanding of learning goals, perhaps woven through a series of courses, and how technology tools facilitate creation of content and management of data related to behavior and performance. Interacts with senior internal and external personnel, and has an exceptional command of communications that represents the organization. May assume responsibility for a program of courses offered at a university or with university affiliates. Provides guidance to other instructional designers, particularly across campus partnerships.

Department Custom Scope
Under the direction of the Director of the Exploration Center for Innovative Teaching and Engagement (XCITE), the Instructional Designer 4 serves as a practice expert in faculty development models and strategies and as a pedagogical leader for the campus; perform as a Academic and instructional specialist in the adaptation of emerging pedagogical strategies and educational technologies; and act as a liaison with the larger campus community, particularly in translating classroom teaching practices into student-centered, active, authentic, and connected learning experiences. In this capacity, the faculty developer will work individually and participate in cross-functional teams, to help facilitate high impact projects and programs that align with the UCR 2022 Strategic Plan and of Academic Excellence, Access, Diversity, and Engagement.

Applies advanced professional instructional design and technology skills to create highly complex online course designs, map learning objectives/outcomes to create performance data, apply programming knowledge or use technical tools to enable delivery of user behavior data related to interactive learning activities.
  • Plans, develops, recommends, and implements professional development programs, in coordination with the XCITE Instructional Design team.

Designs, delivers, and implements programs, resources, and services to support faculty in the development of course and program curriculum and in face-to-face, hybrid, HyFlex, and online instructional modalities. Collaborate with faculty on course design as needed.

Consults with faculty and staff to determine methods for delivery of course content and advocates technology tools and creative processes that advances student engagement and academic learning.
  • Researches, articulates, and disseminates innovative best practices in faculty development, teaching, learning and technology, in all instructional modalities and actively seeks out knowledge of new and emerging learning technologies.

Creates multimedia content, including interactive learning activities, video or audio components. Establishes detailed schedules for individual or multiple courses within a program, and oversees production.

May oversee testing content and tools to meet ADA requirements, research and document copyright for embedded media and other non-faculty-created content.
  • Builds community and expertise among faculty by facilitating committee and departmental gatherings as well as connecting faculty to external professional development opportunities.

Monitors course progress during instructional term and resolves issues with faculty and teaching assistants and others.

Works in a collaborative manner with other instructional designers, technology staff, faculty, and teaching assistants and demonstrates diplomacy and tact in all communications.
  • Develops, adapts, and manages surveys to assess teaching gaps/training needs and evaluate the effectiveness of faculty development-related services and activities. Prepares reports on faculty development programs.

Works in a collaborative manner with others in a diverse environment and at all levels in the organization to prioritize work assignments, conduct analysis, and develop recommendations.
  • Manage communication between all team-members involved in assignment. Coordinate and ensure completion of the various tasks associated with the course instructional design process.
