Custom Scope
Utilizing advanced, specialized expertise provides direction and guidance to lower level Student Services professionals in specialized student life and development programs, and resolves the most complex cases/situations; and/or has programmatic responsibility for a discreet complex Student Life & Development function or content area.

Department Custom Scope
Reporting directly to the Associate Dean of Students, Ethnic & Gender Center, the Director, Foster Youth Support Services (FYSS) provides individualized services to former foster youth. Services may include coordinating academic needs assessment, developing individual study plans, recognizing and addressing academic and non-academic barriers to academic success, and advising on other aspects that may affect student retention and academic success. The Director will work with a variety of underrepresented groups to ensure this student population possess the academic (e.g. study, research, preparation for graduate programs),social, emotional, and cultural skills to be successful at UCR.

May provide strategic vision and oversight on development of program design and applicability. Measures, assesses, and evaluates programs and staff.
  • Evaluate program effectiveness on an ongoing basis, using appropriate assessment tools and utilize feedback to inform future priorities, enhancements, and initiatives which respond to the evolving needs of students and the university. Multi-tasking is critical skill for success in this position.

Manages a program of providing counseling, guidance and development to student leaders or student government. Oversee(s) a program(s) and service(s) of diverse complexity and scope.
  • Evaluate the needs and interests of current and former foster youth students and collaborate with student affairs colleagues, university housing, faculty and student leadership to develop short- and long-term strategic goals for the FYSS and to design programs to meet these needs. Develop and implement a comprehensive set of social, cultural, educational development programs designed to facilitate the success and retention of former foster youth students. Facilitate a positive, constructive environment for foster youth students at the University.

Independently resolves the most complex individual cases regarding student affairs or student life issues.

Develops and maintains complex or sensitive relationships with external organizations critical to program success. Represents the organizations to UC, the local community, and other relevant audiences.
  • Maintains relationships with internal and external organization stakeholders with other educational and community institutions and agencies to develop a network of resources important for student and program success.

Collaborate and work with Guardian Scholars' Executive Director, including donor relations and development. Strong writing skills are expected and ideal.

Conducts outreach events and serves as a liaison with area programs that serve high school and community college foster youth to provide information, guidance, and encouragement to pursue a four-year degree. Collaborates with campus and community partners to raise awareness and understanding of the issues that face foster youth.

Budget, Fiscal & Personnel Management: Oversee annual operating budget and establish budget priorities consistent with campus and departmental goals and objectives. Research and develop new sources of contract and grant funding. Oversee the preparation, coordination, and submission of intra and extramural contracts and grants. Develop and manage a program operating budget involving multiple fund sources and types of fund. Ensure that proper fiscal controls are established and maintained.

Supervise and direct the activities of program coordinator and student staff, including hiring, evaluating performance, assigning work. Develop, encourage, promote, and monitor professional growth and staff development of professional and student staff at all levels. For professional staff includes, recommending annual merit increases, recommending reclassification, initiating disciplinary actions, and resolving complaints/grievances. Ensure compliance with university personnel policies and regulations.
