Generic Scope
Provides immediate supervision to a unit or group of operational or technical employees. A portion of time may be spent performing individual tasks related to the unit; however, supervisory activities must constitute a primary part of the job. Supervises unit operations to ensure compliance with departmental or organizational policies, procedures, and defined internal controls. Ensures accountability and stewardship of department resources (operational, financial, and human) in compliance with departmental standards and procedures.

Custom Scope
Provides supervision to Student Services Assistants ensuring that procedural guidance to students is timely and accurate. Directs subordinates to guidelines, procedures, and processes.

Department Custom Scope
Reporting to the Director, the Assistant Director for Residential Life manages and coordinates the residential functions associated with the residential experience for students and staff. Utilizing a team approach (through the direct supervision of professional staff and indirect supervision of para-professional staff) the AD will exercise sound judgment to facilitate a positive living environment within residential communities. This incumbent will manage administrative tasks associated with the residential area, including but not limited to purchasing, conduct review, and scheduling as well as, implementation of initiatives that promote a sense of community in the residential area. Assist with the development and training of career and student staff. Provides crisis response through participation in on-call duty rotation. Acknowledge the diversity of the student body, to work proactively toward creating a community atmosphere in which people respect each other's rights, properties, and sensitivities. Identify and articulate student needs and issues within a developmental framework and collaborate with others in the department to provide an effective departmental/institutional response to those needs and issues. Regular office hours are required and visibility to the campus community and student body is important. Some evening and weekend work is required.

  • Directly supervises 4 Resident Directors. Indirect supervision of 15-25 Resident Assistants (student staff members)

Provides guidance and direction on most complex operational issues and problems.
  • Leads the development of a comprehensive residential life program for assigned area. Through program development, collaboration with campus departments, assessment of programmatic initiatives, as well as budgetary direction and oversight. Individually conducts counseling, mediation process, and intervention in emergencies, critical student incidents, and student conflicts. Serves in the second tier Residential Life on-call rotation and manages all other on-call duty rotations.

Recommends changes to program policies, processes, and procedures.
  • Serves as area experts to advice on departmental and campus processes related to safety & security, engagement & development, and the development of programs and initiatives for residential students and career staff.

Serves as a student conduct hearing officer for complex, egregious, and repeated violations. Manages appeals of direct reports conduct decisions. Responsible for monitoring judicial processing timelines of direct reports. Advises administration and direct reports on policy & procedure, trends, and best practices in student conduct administration.
