Custom Scope
Using knowledge and skills as a seasoned, experienced Student Services professional, performs the full range of duties and responsibilities within a Student Life specialization. Assesses situations and determines appropriate action or referral. Works independently under general supervision to provide information and interpretation of complex policies, procedures and regulations. Identifies and responds to student needs for programs, services, and crisis intervention.

Department Custom Scope
The Fraternity and Sorority Advisor is responsible for assisting the Fraternity and Sorority Involvement Center (FSIC) Coordinator in providing comprehensive support to the University?s fraternities and sororities; including assistance with University recognition, recruitment, program and event planning, major event management, risk management, hazing education and prevention, equity, diversity, and inclusion education, accessing University resources, understanding and negotiating University policies and procedures, organizational development and enhancement, fundraising, promotion, marketing and communication. The Fraternity and Sorority Advisor is responsible for advising two governing councils and their member organizations, communicating and developing a working relationship with both internal and external stakeholders, developing and implementing educational and social programming for both individuals and chapters, and responding to emergencies as needed. This position encompasses a wide variety of educational and administrative duties in the areas of student staff, student group advising, leadership training and development, event planning, and financial management. The fraternity and sorority community at The University of California Riverside consists of 33 social fraternities and sororities with more than 1,200 student members. The Advisor further provides active support to campus leadership programs and large scale-campus wide events coordinated through the Office of Student Life. This position will support the Student Life mission, vision, and strategic plan, which includes a focus on social justice, leadership development, and creating a sense of belonging for students. The budgeted amount for this position is up to $55,000.

Key Responsibilities

Description % Time
Provides ongoing transformational advising and development to student leaders participating in student government, co-curricular programs and/or organizations on a wide range of issues. Advises student leaders on complex and sensitive issues. Brings extensive knowledge to a student generated field of interest and supports, guides and mentors students in formulating projects related to those issues. Guides students in interaction with campus leaders and represents students on these issues when appropriate. Coaches student leaders on communication and leadership skills.
  • Provides day to day advisement and developmental resources both collectively and individually to fraternities and sororities within two governing councils. Advises two of the four councils (CMC, CPA, IFC, and NPHC) and their executive officers. Attend council executive meetings, council meetings, and meetings with individual executive officers assisting with program planning. Actively seeks opportunities to interact with students in order to be aware of current student issues and concerns. Develops contacts with student leaders and encourage active student participation in the planning and implementation of campus programs. Promotes and facilitates educational programs and events that assist student organizations in all areas of operation; including new member and member development workshops. Assists student organizations in developing new policies and procedures that enable them to run their organizations in an efficient manner. Assists organizations by interpreting policy and procedure, as well as assisting leaders in the day-to-day operations of their particular organizations. Educate members on and ensure adherence to all National, local, and university policies. Assists and works collaboratively with the Student Conduct and Academic Integrity Programs office to hold chapters accountable towards completion of sanctions and chapter development. Work to educate student organizations about risk management, protocol, and University policies.

Develops and maintains relationships with internal and external organization stakeholders critical to program success.
  • Serve as a liaison between Fraternity and Sorority chapters and campus administrators; assist in the resolution of conflicts. Serve as a liaison and resource for advisors, alumni, and national offices to enhance the overall Greek system development at the University. Maintain open levels of communication with chapter officers, chapter advisors, faculty advisors, alumni and national officers and provide educational programming as needed.

Assists in planning, implementation, and evaluation of annual Fraternity and Sorority programs including but not limited to leadership retreats, new member trainings, activities fairs, and other programs. Assists with development and facilitation of new and continuing member education, hazing prevention and education, diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice education, risk management education, leadership development, and evaluation. Conducts basic evaluations of workshops, trainings, and programs, and summarizes data results.

Provides recommendations, reports, and metrics on feasibility of new and current programs.
  • Works with supervisor to evaluate program effectiveness on an ongoing basis, utilizing appropriate assessment tools, such as surveys, program evaluation forms, and staff summaries and utilize feedback to inform future priorities, enhancements, and initiatives which respond to the evolving needs of students, student organizations, and the University.
