Generic Scope
Provides direct supervision typically to professionals or skilled technical employees. Functions as advisor to unit and administration. Analyzes and resolves problems, interprets policies (e.g., fiscal management, HR, contracts and grants, resource management in defined areas) and demonstrates solid subject matter knowledge. Exercises judgment within defined procedures and policies to determine appropriate action. Supervises staff to assure accountability and stewardship of department resources (operational, financial, and human) in compliance with departmental goals and objectives.

Custom Scope
Oversees the administration and operations of health profession education programs which may include teaching and learning activities, program curriculum, learner scheduling, maintaining databases, tracking learner compliance, and program accreditation. Develops, prioritizes and implements strategies that improve program quality, processes, and compliance.

Department Custom Scope
The Director of Simulation Operations is responsible for designing, conducting, promoting, evaluating and supporting health professions education programs in compliance with organizational objections and nationally accepted accreditation standards and requirements. Supports learners (including, but not limited to, faculty, residents, students, fellows, graduate or undergraduate learners, practicing or licensed professionals) in areas such as curriculum, teaching and learning activities, scheduling, core competencies, assessment and evaluations. Coordinates all activities associated with ongoing administration of health professions education programs.

Key Responsibilities

Manages the overall delivery and day to day operations of a program including overseeing logistics, tracking student databases, related educational activities, and recruiting faculty to teach in the program. Monitors activities and documentation to ensure program will meet accreditation standards and reports to national accrediting bodies.
  • Responsible for contributing to instruction sessions for medical student education and faculty development and ensuring educational activities offered by the CSPC are high-yield, efficient and create a positive and safe learning environment for learners. Coordinate and manage the scheduling of community-based facilitation and instruction.

Directly supervises health professions education staff that coordinate all activities associated with ongoing administration of the program. Monitors curriculum, teaching and learning activities, scheduling, and assessment activities support learners and meet standards.
  • Works with simulation technical staff to further enhance the quality of simulations offered by the CSPC for learners and promote a cohesive educational environment.

Implements systems, streamlines processes and enforces guidelines to ensure consistency in curriculum delivery and learner assessment across clinical sites and reduce administrative inefficiencies. Assesses learner/program evaluation data trends, complies and presents data to program leadership, and actively leads and participates in continuous improvement efforts.
  • Develops, analyzes, and implements policies and procedures to ensure programs are compliant with accreditation standards and other regulatory requirements. Assesses information and makes recommendations regarding program challenges and opportunities. Responsible for creating and maintaining the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for the simulation functions. Analyzes health professions education program goals, needs and desired outcomes to determine feasibility of changes and suggests alternatives as necessary to ensure an overall successful outcome. In conjunction with SOM IT, evaluate CSPC technology and make recommendations for the replacement/upgrade of existing technology based on emerging technologies and best industry standards in order to enhance teaching and learning practices.

Acts as advisor to management. Provides leadership and maintains strong ties with all levels of educational program staff, department administration, and University stakeholders. Develops new approaches or methods for maintaining effective communication.
  • Develops and maintains working partnerships with key stakeholders to assure seamless implementation across departments, programs, and practice areas. Partners with UME and GME educational groups and faculty to improve the educational quality of the program. In collaboration with Strategic Initiatives (SI), builds relationships across the campus and community to allow the CSPC to be service provider of choice for AHA CPR instruction, simulation training, and safety training. Works with UCR SOM SI department to identify and pursue additional revenue opportunities with a focus on residency programs who currently do not have home simulation centers.

Responsible for recommending topics for health professions education events, conferences and workshops. Actively participates in the UC Simulation Consortium and the California Simulation Alliance. Leads the planning and logistics of hosting the UC Simulation Consortium at UCR. In conjunction with unit FAO and lead Analyst, determined requirements for space, procurement, facilities, technology, equipment, lodging, catering and on site management. Leads workshops and/or information sessions for faculty and staff.

Manages the program database, which may include individual learner files as well as program accreditation documentation, to ensure compliance with relevant regulatory and University policies. Audits databases for accuracy and completeness. Uses data and analytics to identify, analyze, and resolve problems, which may be operational or educational.

Works with faculty to develop and organize course curriculum, advising on course development needs and designing competencies and skills. Determines the logistical feasibility of new curriculum content including competencies and skills. Monitors program communications and collaborates with program leadership to develop and maintain a program marketing strategy.
  • Works with UME and GME faculty to evaluate the efficiency of the existing curriculum and make recommendations for implementing curriculum updates/changes for the CSPC.

Assists with administration and management of resources, approving program-related charges, and communicating significant changes as they occur to program management.
  • Actively participates in monthly budget and planning meetings. Responsible for budget development, recommending fee structures updates and monitoring the SIM budget. In conjunction with unity FAO and lead Analyst, responsible for ensuring services provided via the Sales & Service Operation are billing accordingly.

Oversees health profession learner placement in clinical educational activities. Actively guides and counsels on learner remediation and advising to ensure high retention of clinical placements.

Participates in recruiting and conducts new employee orientation. Recommends changes in staffing and budget to ensure the efficient operation of the program. Evaluates staff performance and competency and defines development goals.
  • Responsible for ensuring Facilitators and BYA Educators complete the UC required training and CSPC orientation. Ensures all new onboarding requests are submitted and processed by the CSPC admin team prior to facilitation taking place.

Trains program coordinators, teaching strategic planning, analysis, and program management techniques. Mentors staff in meeting professional goals and developing growth areas. Assists management in coordinating staff development, training, and competency assessment.
  • Trains faculty to perform self led simulations by implementing a Train the Trainer model for all faculty led simulation.
