Department Custom Scope
The Senior Licensing Officer will primarily be responsible for managing the commercialization of the agriculture technology intellectual property (IP) portfolio, but may also include other technology areas such as clean energy & fuels, clean transportation & infrastructure, natural resource management, food security, health & health disparity, as required. The Senior Licensing Officer will focus on research, assessment, and marketing of UCR IP, negotiating complex technology transfer agreements, monitoring licensee performance and obligations, and engagement with faculty and students to support technology transfer and entrepreneurial activities on campus and commercialization of their inventions. The incumbent is expected to interact with internal and external stakeholders, including others on the Technology Commercialization and Technology Partnerships team, UCR faculty and students, entrepreneurs, and industry partners. The Senior Licensing Officer should be an experienced, customer-service oriented professional in technology transfer with the ability to communicate effectively and plan, organize, and prioritize assignments and work independently to complete assignments. This position will report to the Director of Technology Commercialization as part of the Office of Technology Partnerships within Research and Economic Development at the University of California, Riverside.

Key Responsibilities

Description % Time
Applies intellectual property/technology licensing/transfer concepts to evaluate complex commercial potential, formulating complex licensing strategy, negotiating and drafting complex agreements, and executing limited agreements for a substantial portfolio of complex inventions.
  • Performs research and assessment of entire agriculture technology intellectual property portfolio (and others, as assigned) for commercialization opportunities, including but not limited to identifying: technology development pathway, commercialization ecosystem, competitive landscape, customer discovery, market validation, value proposition, patent recommendation, and potential royalty projections. Assessments will be completed, for each invention, in a written report/presentation format and presented during technology evaluation meetings. May include participation in entrepreneurial training activities to conduct market research and customer discover, such as INNOVAR I-Corps Workshop.

Markets new technology to potential industrial partners.
  • Develop marketing material (one-page non-confidential disclosures, informational slides, executive summary, abstracts) for each available invention in portfolio. Market technologies and engage with potential industry partners or entrepreneurs to facilitate technology transfer of inventions.

Evaluates complex potential licensees and development teams to evolve licensing strategies considering the market data, interest and longer term public benefit.
  • Negotiates complex technology transfer related contracts and agreements involving industry. In addition, advises on intellectual property clauses, contracts and agreements in complex sponsored and collaborative research and material testing and transfer agreements. Works to identify and resolve intellectual property related matters involving inventors, campuses, research sponsors, laboratories, and licensees.

Assures licensee meets all licensing obligations and intervenes or initiates action when commitments are not met.
  • Responsibilities include monitoring licensee performance, progress reports, due diligence, milestones, fees and patent cost reimbursements are being paid on time.

Coordinates with researchers on commercialization strategy.
  • On a regular and recurring basis, meets with researchers to review research direction in order to develop a commercialization strategy, review commercialization efforts undertaken by Senior Licensing Officer of the researchers? IP portfolio, and review federal grants and industry contract reports for identification of potentially commercializable IP.

Conducts training with faculty regarding intellectual property/technology transfer policies and procedures.

Advises on patentability of institution's inventions.
  • Acts as a backup to the IP Analyst, when needed, to work with outside patent counsel to file patent applications and manage attorney prosecution of patent applications.
