Department Custom Scope
Incumbent will perform gardening and maintenance tasks in the Botanic Gardens, including care and maintenance of in-ground and potted plants, garden beds, lawns, orchard, trails, and walkways. Duties include preparing soil for planting, installing plants, trimming and pruning plants and removing refuse, removing weeds, watering by hand or using sprinklers, and performing minor maintenance on walkways, garden structures (e.g., gazebos and fences), and retaining walls. Assist in preparing and installing memorial benches and plaques. Will use hand tools and power tools including mowers, weed whackers, saws, blowers, drills, and others as required. Will operate pickup truck and off-road vehicles in performing work.

Key Responsibilities

Description % Time
General Maintenance: ? Pruning: Prune trees and shrubs to remove deadwood and hazards, and to improve appearance. ? Plant Removal: Remove dead or declining shrubs and trees. ? Weeds: Remove or suppress weeds by manual or chemical means. ? Trails: repair trails, keep paths clear of encroaching vegetation, and mitigate erosion. ? Watering: water beds and turf areas to maintain plant vigor and occasionally water pots. ? Waste: routinely dump plant debris and trash. ? Accompany manager on garden walks to discuss and create cleanup lists ? Maintain turfgrass according to the turfgrass maintenance program, which includes fertilizing, mowing, edging, aerating, reseeding, and watering. ? Assist manager with power equipment inspection on the weed whackers, mower, and blower. ? Repair and maintenance of drainage areas, benches, gazebos, retaining walls, and other small garden structures and facilities. ? Assist manager in maintenance projects such as mulching, deadheading, structural tree pruning, fire abatement, and dethatching. ? Install new plants to replace dead or declining specimens or to add to a garden or geographic collection.

Irrigation: ? Retrofit and install new automated irrigation throughout the garden. ? Collect irrigation data needed for new irrigation designs. ? Inspect and repair irrigation throughout the garden.
