Custom Scope
Provides a limited range of professional knowledge and strategies related to learning skills for students. Works independently on standard program presentation. May receive guidance from higher level Student Academic Specialists in adapting counseling to specific learning styles and linguistic issues .

Department Custom Scope
The Supplemental Instruction (SI) program provides peer-led study sessions for students who want to improve their academic performance, while attending to the campus learning community programs and courses known to provide an academic challenge. The Assistant Coordinator develops and implements training programs to prepare Academic Student Employees (ASE) for their roles as SI Leaders. The Assistant Coordinator aids in the supervision of a team of ASEs, and reports to the Coordinator, Supplemental Instruction.

Delivers professional academic programs to students that enhance academic success through a course-based format of service for a limited range of learning issues for a narrow field of study in an academic discipline (e.g., first-year course writing; a specific course like introductory biology in the sciences; pre-college calculus in math/science). Helps students in critical transition stages, including high school or community college to first year research university undergraduate course work; lower division to upper division; first semester issues; upper division course work to advanced research/capstone-level project; undergraduate to graduate-level academic preparation.
  • Communicate regularly with course instructor of record and instructional staff team about changes and developments regarding the course. Show campus expertise on SI study sessions and the use of SI Leaders to improve student access.

Assesses appropriate needs of students; may refer students to specific student programs such as the disabled student program, financial aid, college/departmental advisors.

Utilizes academic support service models to support and enhance student learning, academic success, and intellectual development.
  • Serve as clearinghouse for best practices in SI Leader training for academic support. Meet with colleagues from other institutions and UC campuses, attend professional conferences, and stay apprised of best practices and literature in order to continuously improve the SI Leader training program.

Mentors undergraduates to enhance disciplinary and professional trajectories.
  • Regularly write reports for the Supplemental Instruction program.

Recruit, interview, select, and hire a team of Academic Student Employee (ASE) SI Leaders and SI Mentors each academic term. Develop a joint student employee recruitment and selection plan for SI and other student staff positions in the department, working closely with ARC Assistant Directors and Program Coordinators. Train student peer mentors in skills specific to the SI position. Develop and maintain SI Manual.

Applies and administers intake, assessment, and evaluation tools to a broad range of students of varying learning needs and levels of academic preparedness.
  • Coordinate intake process for SI and guidelines for participation. Perform regular needs assessments and regularly evaluate impact and effectiveness of SI program on student academic success and student development. Included, but not limited to, assist writing a quarterly assessment on the goals, objective outcomes and effectiveness of the program.

Establishes and maintains partnerships with organization departments and units.
  • Work collaboratively with Admissions, Undergraduate Education, Athletics, university departments, and colleges regarding development of programs to assist students considered to be Admitted by Exception.

Supervise SI Leaders and provide on-going and quarterly evaluations of their performance.
