Department Custom Scope
The Simulation Technician works under general supervision to provide technical assistance in the setup, calibration, inspection, maintenance and operation of medical simulation ("simulation" to include: Mechanical, human, virtual, and task trainers) center ("center" to include both mechanical and standardized (human)) equipment, as well as simulation center clinical supply maintenance. Will also coordinate AV equipment and any electronic systems used to enable and/or record training activities throughout the School of Medicine. To assist in facilitating the operation of human, mechanical, virtual, and task trainer simulators for academic health programs, training events, recruiting programs, and demonstrations. This position exists to provide technical support for all simulation center operations, including but not limited to case development (in conjunction with faculty instructors), scenario preparation, operation of simulation event including manikins, maintenance and repair of high fidelity manikins, task trainers and multimedia peripherals and, also, to assist with the electronic instructional adjuncts throughout the facility. Activities include setting up, troubleshooting, monitoring, operating, and basic maintenance of the equipment within the simulation center. The Simulation Technician will assist staff with scheduling of simulation equipment as well as standardized patients. The Simulation Technician will assist in the training of standardized patients and fill in as a standardized patient as needed. The Simulation Technician will also support faculty when using the lab for instructional use or within classrooms.

Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training. Required
In addition to the minimum experience requirements, an additional 4 years of related experience can substitue for the degree requirement. Preferred

2 years of related experience must be in maintenance, repair, and technical support of simulation equipment and/or medical device systems in a healthcare delivery setting, Required
4 - 7 years of related experience. Required
3 years of related experience must be working in a simulation/training center environment. Required
Experience must also include demonstrated knowledge of videotape recording and audio visual equipment. Experience in maintenance and technical support of AV equipment. Required
Working knowledge medical simulators. Familiarity with physiological monitoring systems, infant incubators, ventilators, and other common medical device systems. Preferred
Prior experience working in a healthcare environment as a Registered Nurse, Respiratory Therapist, Paramedic, EMT, or other similar role. Preferred
Experience must include: knowledge of the "standardized (human) patient" case design, development, and utilization; the delivery of high fidelity simulation and programming using Laerdal Software and Gaumard Birthing Simulators and software. Required

Simulation Center Operations (Virtual, Mechanical, and Standardized Patients): 1. Install, operate, maintain, and upkeep equipment in the Simulation Center (including but not limited to: mannequins, computers, software, and audio/visual equipment), assisting all clients of the Simulation Center, as needed, to ensure a positive learning environment and experience. 2. Coordinate, manage, maintain, and update all hardware, software, audiovisual, multimedia, and computer-based technology and equipment. 3. Serve as on-site point person for Department staff and users for all matters concerning audiovisual system and clinical education technology. 4. Prepare materials and equipment for simulation scenarios. 5. Restock rooms, assist with inventory, and clean simulation equipment following each scenario. 6. Input, manage, and update all data in system including users, checklists, cases, and scoring. 7. Other duties as assigned.

Interviews and assesses client requirements for instructional technology and advises on appropriate technology to meet specific instructional activities. Provides consultative advice to clients on technical, media methods, techniques and equipment in order to enhance the quality of the presentation. Advises users on technical options. Plans and consults regarding the installation of new equipment and equipment upgrades.
  • Facilitate scenarios with students, staff, health care providers, and community groups as well as faculty to meet the needs of staff, students, and community groups in a collaborative manner. Assist and support faculty when using the lab for instructional use or in classrooms.

Applies appropriate data collection methods to develop technical requirements for events and instruction. Develops standards, processes, and procedures to ensure consistent service delivery to clients. Develops user documentation, process improvements, or system design requirements. Coordinates special programs and projects in AV or instructional technology field, including media production, teaching with technology or web distribution. Works with a wide variety of media technologies, networks and computer hardware and software, applying appropriate solutions to non-standard problems.
  • Act as direct liaison with technology vendors and internal technology department. Interface with vendor technical support team to resolve issues and assure quality control. Collaborate and assist with the SOM IT and campus computing department as needed.

Applies project management concepts in combination with AV IT policies and procedures in determining technical support work flow. Analyzes and interprets intellectual property (IP) policy and law and ensures that media meets IP requirements. Evaluates external content for compliance with unit and content posting standards. Assists in researching and evaluating new technologies.

Develops and provides training as needed based on consultation with users and their understanding of AV technologies.
  • Attend necessary training and conferences to stay current with simulator technology.

Generate recordings and automated schedules in software recording system. Develop and maintain schedules of students and programs in system according to curriculum. Record and capture videos and photos for student training materials.
