Department Custom Scope
The Mentorship Coordinator is responsible for management of the Graduate Student Mentorship Program (GSMP) within GradSuccess. Under the direction of the GradSuccess Director, the Coordinator is responsible for selection and orientation of the mentee cohort and provision of small group mentoring support by peer and faculty mentors throughout the mentees? first year of graduate study. Hires, trains, and supervises graduate student support, selects faculty mentors, maintains records, and collaborates with other departments. Provides program support for marketing, data analysis and assessment.

Key Responsibilities

Description % Time
Delivers professional academic programs to students that enhance academic success through a course-based format of service for a limited range of learning issues for a narrow field of study in an academic discipline (e.g., first-year course writing; a specific course like introductory biology in the sciences; pre-college calculus in math/science). Helps students in critical transition stages, including high school or community college to first year research university undergraduate course work; lower division to upper division; first semester issues; upper division course work to advanced research/capstone-level project; undergraduate to graduate-level academic preparation.
  • Manages Graduate Student Mentorship Program (GSMP). Manages all daily functions of the program, which provides yearlong mentoring support to incoming PhD and MFA students, including review of mentee applications, hiring of peer mentors, and recruitment of faculty mentors. In conjunction with the Dean and Director, develops long and short-term goals for the GSMP and related mentoring programs and develops plans for achieving those goals. Trains and supervises part-time graduate student peer mentors.

Assesses appropriate needs of students; may refer students to specific student programs such as the disabled student program, financial aid, college/departmental advisors.
  • Develops and maintains assessment mechanisms including surveys, biweekly reports, and quarterly reflections. Analyzes data, prepares recommendations, and implements interventions as needed. Drafts quarterly and annual GSMP reports.

Develops and delivers annual orientation for peer mentors and quarterly ongoing training sessions in accordance with CRLA IPTPC certification requirements. Develops and delivers annual orientation and meetings, mixers, and workshops for mentee cohort. Plans and delivers annual end-of-year banquet. Supports and promotes GradSuccess academic support, community building, and professional development activities. Participate in other GradSuccess event planning activities.

Provides guidance to student mentors. Recruit, interview, select, and hire a team of 30-40 graduate students from across campus eligible to serve as part-time (11%) peer mentors. Select 2-4 to serve as Special Topics Peer Mentors. Train and supervise peer mentors and provide ongoing guidance on mentorship best practices.

Establishes and maintains partnerships with organization departments and units.
  • Partners with Counseling and Psychological Services, the WELL, International Student Services, the Ethnic and Gender program offices, departmental staff and other campus units to effectively support mentors and mentees, recruit peer and faculty mentors, and connect Special Topics Peer Mentors to resources.

Utilizes academic support service models to support and enhance student learning, academic success, and intellectual development.
  • Holds weekly office hours for peer mentors and mentees to connect them to campus resources and help troubleshoot issues.
