Department Custom Scope
Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Landscape Services, the Sr. Farm Mechanic plans, organizes, and directs the operation of the grounds machinery service garage. Performs service, maintenance, and repair of a wide variety of grounds equipment such as: pickups, light and heavy trucks, tractors, trailers, various farm implements, turf machines, small engines, air compressors, sprayers, fertilizer spreaders, engines, and pumps. Diagnoses and corrects mechanical malfunctions; repairs, overhauls and rebuilds gasoline, propane and diesel engines, transmissions, differentials, drive trains and hydraulic, electrical, and cooling systems. Lubricates grounds machinery. Dismounts, repairs, and replaces tires. Makes sheet metal repairs by welding and brazing; operates metal lathes, drill presses, milling machines, grinders, and other shop tools. Establishes and ensures shop safety procedures are followed and maintained at all times. Sets up inspection and preventative maintenance schedules and ensures schedules are followed. Maintains clear and accurate documentation of shop activities, materials, supplies, equipment, and repairs. Maintains a positive attitude and communicates clearly and effectively with management, supervisors, staff, another university personnel. Performs other related duties as required.

Key Responsibilities

Description % Time
Equipment Repair: Rebuilds and repairs single to 8 piston engines of 2 or 4 cycle configurations, carbureted or injected. Rebuilds and repairs drive train components on wheeled and on-wheeled equipment including: transmissions, pulleys, belts, chains, bearings, tires, and cables. Fabricates damaged equipment components. Rebuilds and repairs diesel powered equipment. Performs welding functions using gas/acetylene, arc, and tungsten inert gas welding units to repair or construct equipment. Mounts, repairs, and balances tires. Repairs, replaces, and adjusts hydraulic pumps, motors, rams, and valves after determining system dynamic pressures. Determines timing and replacement of hydraulic hoses and other hydraulic system components. Uses an oscilloscope, test light, induction amp motor and/or volt meter to diagnose machinery electrical problems. Rebuilds, adjusts, and repairs equipment electrical components such as alternators, generators, lights, switches and wiring. Designs and installs supplemental equipment lighting and accessory systems as required.

Equipment Maintenance: Performs maintenance on fuel systems. Sharpens turf reel or rotary mowers, tillers, sod cutters, verticutters, flails, and aerifyers. Adjusts unit bedknives and cutting/slicing positions.

Preventative Maintenance: Performs preventative maintenance such as oil/filter changing, greasing, and other adjustments as needed. Performs hydraulic filter and fluid changes and interprets manufacturer?s preventative schedules. Implements full preventative maintenance schedule and program for all department owned power equipment.

Shop Support and Record Maintenance: Maintains working knowledge of the proper and safe usage of shop equipment, tools and materials. Implements, maintains and ensures shop safety procedures are followed to protect personnel, public safety, and university property. Keeps track of shop materials/parts. Performs computer input within the work order system for recording of labor and materials used in work performed; maintains clear and accurate documentation of all inspections, testing, and maintenance performed. Uses computers and Microsoft Office programs to maintain documents, spreadsheets, and logs. Maintains computerized equipment tracking and repair logs. Cleans shop and maintains organization of materials and tools; performs routine maintenance or coordinates for repair or replacement of tools and equipment, as required. Accounts for shop parts/supplies inventory and reports supply needs to be restocked. Obtains materials and equipment, as required. Works with vendors and suppliers to obtain quotes and part orders as needed. Submits purchase order requests following all department and University purchasing policies. Consults with supervisor for technical information, as needed. Interprets manufacturer manuals and maintenance schedules. Adheres to the scheduling and completion of work assignments. Maintains accurate work order records and completes paperwork in a neat and timely manner. Defines and describes materials, tools and/or equipment, work methods, and task sequences. Participates in safety and other trainings as required. Performs all job duties in adherence to all university and departmental safety guidelines.

Communication: Communicates progress of work verbally, in writing, and/or by email. Responds to daily work orders and performs necessary emergency requests, as instructed. Provides daily updates to supervisors of equipment status. Maintains a positive attitude and communicates effectively with management, supervisors, colleagues, and other staff. Communicates and reports to a supervisor and/or staff regarding any potential issues, not limited to repair delays, maintenance issues, completion of work, potential safety hazards, and liabilities or conditions/items requiring repair or replacement.
