Department Custom Scope
Provides department and college level advising service for a subset of the college's undergraduate majors. Leads or supports the coordination of student success activity or a process supporting the advising function; the assigned activity, which is moderate in scope and complexity, targets a specified range of students. Uses independent judgment to identify and resolve manageable issues, and seeks guidance on issues with larger implications. Identifies and reports issues with larger implications to Director, Assistant Director, or lead Advisor in a timely manner.

Key Responsibilities

Applies professional concepts to independently provide prescriptive advice and assistance to students on academic and degree progress and major requirements for the department/school/college.
  • Prescriptive advising often leads to opportunities for other forms of advising i.e. developmental advising, appreciative advising, and mentoring. In this capacity the Academic Advisor serves as the first line of contact for students on all academic, career, and personal matters; establishes rapport vital to effective consultation and guidance; uses knowledge and experience to assess issues impeding success; meets each student where they are to address unique concerns; understand boundaries and limitations, and refers students appropriately. NOTE: Direct advising in all of its forms -- i.e. one-on-one in-person or remote advising, group advising, email advising, etc. -- is the primary purpose of the position.

Supports or leads secondary roles that encourage student success or support the advising function. Secondary roles range from moderate to complex, given growth in position, expanded capabilities, and potential for value added beyond scope of role. Advisor may perform more than one secondary role. Current secondary roles include: (a) Student success activities: coordinates or supports learning communities, freshman advising seminars, peer mentoring, transfer transition programming, new student orientations, major/cohort based workshops, etc. (b) Recruitment, admissions, freshman orientation--coordinates BCOE's participation in campus-wide recruitment efforts; coordinates freshman orientations. (c) Transfer admission and orientation: evaluates exceptions to transfer admission criteria, updates secondary transfer admission criteria, orient UCR Admission Counselors to criteria, etc.; support coordination of orientations for new transfer students. (d) Articulations: coordinates course articulation process (e) Change of major processing: oversees change of major process, degree holding categories for students transition to and out of BCOE majors. (f) Curriculum support: oversees updates to suggested course plans and breadth course list; supports colleagues in updating waivers and substitutions lists per major; monitor AP/IB credit to ensure accuracy and sync with timely degree progress, etc. (g) Staff and resource development: supports training of new staff; develops and enhances resources supporting the advising function i.e. presentations, website content, etc.; collaborates with computer programmers in design of online advising tools, etc. (h) Independent analysis: independently identifies issues with larger implications, develops understanding, and reports issues to higher authorities within BCOE in a timely manner.

Monitors and evaluates students' completion of academic requirements.
  • This includes routine monitoring of students? academic progress term to term, ensuring compliance with major/college/university academic policies and degree requirements; responding to petitions of academic policy, rendering decisions or referring to appropriate decider, and noting student records; certification of degree completion.
