Department Custom Scope
Under supervision the Assistant Farm Mechanic assists with the service, maintenance, and repair of a wide variety of grounds equipment such as: pickups, light and heavy trucks, tractors, trailers, various farm implements, turf machines, small engines, air compressors, sprayers, fertilizer spreaders, engines, and pumps. Assists with diagnosing and correcting malfunctions by removing, disassembling, cleaning, repairing and replacing parts of engines, transmissions, differentials and drive train components. Performs the total repair work or tune-up for limited parts of farm equipment such as the brake, electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic systems. Lubricates grounds machinery. Dismounts, repairs, and replaces tires. Operates shop tools and follows safety procedures at all times. Supports the inspection and preventative maintenance schedules as directed. Helps maintain documentation of shop materials, equipment, and repairs. Maintains a positive attitude and communicates clearly and effectively with management, supervisors, staff, and other university personnel. Performs other related duties as required.

Key Responsibilities

Description % Time
Equipment Repair: Assist with the repairs to single to 8 piston engines of 2 or 4 cycle configurations, carbureted or injected. Repairs drive train components on wheeled and on-wheeled equipment including: transmissions, pulleys, belts, chains, bearings, tires, and cables. Supports repairs for diesel powered equipment. Performs welding functions using gas/acetylene, arc, and tungsten inert gas welding units to repair or construct equipment. Mounts, repairs, and balances tires. Provides support with repairs for hydraulic pumps, motors, rams, and valves. Uses an oscilloscope, test light, induction amp motor and/or volt meter to diagnose machinery electrical problems. Assists in the repair of equipment electrical components such as alternators, generators, lights, switches and wiring.

Equipment Maintenance: Performs maintenance on fuel systems. Sharpens turf reel or rotary mowers, tillers, sod cutters, verticutters, flails, and aerifyers. Adjusts unit bedknives and cutting/slicing positions. Lubricates grounds equipment. Retrieves inoperative equipment in the field.

Preventative Maintenance: Performs preventative maintenance such as oil/filter changing, greasing, and other adjustments as needed. Performs hydraulic filter and fluid changes. Flushes water cooling systems.

Shop Support and Record Maintenance: Maintains working knowledge of the proper and safe usage of shop equipment, tools and materials. Maintains and ensures shop safety procedures are followed to protect personnel, public safety, and university property. Helps keeps track of shop materials/parts. Performs computer input within the work order system for recording of labor and materials used in work performed; maintains clear and accurate documentation of all inspections, testing, and maintenance performed. Uses computers and Microsoft Office programs to help maintain documents, spreadsheets, and logs. Helps maintain computerized equipment tracking and repair logs. Cleans shop and maintains organization of materials and tools; performs routine maintenance or coordinates for repair or replacement of tools and equipment, as directed. Accounts for shop parts/supplies inventory and reports supply needs to be restocked. Obtains materials and equipment, as required. Consults with supervisor for technical information, as needed, to understand manufacturer manuals and maintenance schedules. Participates in safety and other trainings as required. Performs all job duties in adherence to all university and departmental safety guidelines.

Provides daily updates to supervisors of equipment status. Maintains a positive attitude and communicates effectively with management, supervisors, colleagues, and other staff.
