Department Custom Scope
Under the general direction of the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (CHASS) Major Advising Director, this position s responsible for all aspects of the academic advising for undergraduate student majors within the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences. Researches, interprets, applies and clarifies University policy in this area and exercises independent judgment in day-to-day student affairs matters. Uses principles of wholistic and developmental academic advising and knowledge of teaching and learning theory to promote academic, career, and life goals in an effort to support student retention, timeliness to degree, academic success, as well as intellectual and personal development. Key Responsibilities

Description % Time
Provides advice and assistance to students on all aspects of their academic experience, including progression and requirement matters for the department/school/college.
  • Serves as the professional academic advisor for CHASS majors and minors by using wholistic and developmental academic advising techniques with students to examine, clarify and meet their educational, career and lifegoals in light of student strengths and interests, while reinforcing student self-direction, motivation, achievement and self-sufficiency. Informs and assists students in interpreting their academic progress toward timely completion of requirements (university, college and majors).

Advises on complex transfers from other institutions such as those in the midst of advanced degree completion and coursework in other programs.
  • Provides initial communication and program planning for entering freshmen and transfer students by interpreting past work and current test scores, and communication of university expectations. Prepares summaries of transfer courses and units of entering transfer students. Communicates with CHASS staff and Undergraduate Admissions staff to correct errors in transfer course evaluations.

Identifies students with GPA or progress problems, advises students, and recommends appropriate courses of action by the department/school/college (e.g., academic probation, dismissal).
  • Examines trends in student success and determines appropriate programming to provide adequate advising services for students including recommendation of appropriate faculty mentors. For students in academic difficulty, works to determine reasons for academic difficulty and offers advice on methods to remedy their difficulties and refers to appropriate campus support departments to improve academic record. Reviews records of students in academic difficulty to determine eligibility to continue in major. Implements supports to help diverse students overcome challenges.

Participates in planning academic curriculum in collaboration with chair/dean and faculty, and with other departments, to ensure student's progress through course sequences, avoid conflicts, and ensure compliance with organization-wide policies.

Determines barriers, distractions, and complications affecting a student's academic success, helps students recognize these key non-academic issues, and makes appropriate referrals for additional therapeutic counseling and/or assistance from other units.
  • As needed or requested by the Academic Advisor Supervisor or Director of CHASS majors advising, prepares information and analytical reports for administrators, departments, and interdisciplinary committees. As needed or requested for timely notification, prepares or composes correspondence that is directed to current and prospective students, college office, and other campus departments.

Advises new and continuing instructors on departmental/school/college and university policies and procedures.

Evaluates and advises students in petitions for exceptions to departmental/school/college and/or Graduate Division requirements.

Assists faculty on determining course scheduling needs for student progression to graduation.

  • Provides academic advising support to related campus programs. Responsible for representing CHASS majors and participating in outreach and retention activities including recruitment, orientation, and advising events (Highlander Orientation, Discover/Welcome Days, Fall Mandatory Orientation Program, college fairs and workshops for student's major). Develops and maintains descriptive materials for recruitment and retention purposes, including development and maintenance of web materials.
