Custom Scope
Writes or edits a variety of comprehensive and difficult material for stylistic consistency, logic, organization, rational development of content, and emphasis. Researches, selects sources for and conducts interviews, and ensures accuracy of written pieces. Recommends content and layout, edits, and coordinates production of a variety of printed and online material, or conversion of printed pieces to online formats and archives.

Department Custom Scope
The Technical Writer and Documentation Specialist will be responsible for supporting both operational and project work. In terms of operational work, this position is primarily responsible for standardizing and maintaining the organization?s IT Knowledge Base (KB) in ServiceNow, a resource that is critical to ITS' ability to provide 24/7 helpdesk support to campus. Standardizing includes developing KB policies, procedures, and guidance documents, including a style guide for support articles. Maintenance includes preparing, reviewing, revising, and maintaining technical documents, as well as providing hands-on support to KB contributors. The incumbent serves on the Communication & Training team, and may be asked to assist in the creation of other written content, infographics, or training materials. In terms of project work, this position may be assigned to assist with large, campus-wide projects and change management efforts. Project work will require close collaboration with project leads and stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

Description % Time
Under limited supervision, researches, writes and/or edits material for a variety of publications for internal and external audiences, consulting with clients as necessary.
  • Internal audience refers to communication artifacts specific to internal processes, procedures, and knowledge. External audience refers to communication artifacts developed for audiences outside of the ITS organization. Clients will consist of internal clients (ITS staff) and project stakeholders, depending on the work.

Produces articles, press releases, profiles, briefings, blogs, collateral, and/or other written material using subject matter expertise.
  • Written material to include knowledge articles, guidance documents, instruction manuals, how-to guides, diagrams/flowcharts, and other supporting documents to communicate complex and technical information.
