Custom Scope
Receives assignments in the form of objectives and determines how to use resources to meet schedules and goals. Has responsibility for organization-wide program management and compliance activities designed to promote health and safety of employees and reduce financial risks. Oversees program management and coordination, loss prevention, analysis communications, training, reporting, and financial outcomes. Erroneous decisions or failure to achieve goals results in additional costs and personnel, and-risk to organization.

Department Custom Scope
The Worker's Compensation and Disability Management Program Manager plans, organizes, administers and supervises the campus Workers' Compensation and Disability Management Program, including reviewing and processing claims, participating in settlement negotiations, recommending loss control strategies, ensuring program conformance to applicable laws and regulations, preparing required reports, and monitoring and evaluating the program activities to ensure the delivery of quality services. This position is also responsible for the design, development, overall management and implementation of the University-wide Worker's Compensation program and disability management programs which encompasses: Worker's Compensation, disability management programs, Transitional Return to Work (TRTW) programs, and Work Strong. The position will liaise with Sedgwick CMS (Workers' Compensation Third Party Administrator), Occupational Health, Central Human Resources, EH&S, Risk Management, UC Office of the President Risk and Safety as well as with physicians, nurses, attorneys and state and federal representatives. The incumbent is responsible to stay current on relevant federal and state laws and regulations, such as Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), CA Labor Codes and CA FEHA, and ensures campus compliance with such laws, as well as campus and system-wide policies governing workers' compensation and disability management. This position is responsible for promoting the health, wellness and safety of of employees while reducing the financial risks associated with injuries and illness. Provides guidance to campus administration regarding development of integrated disability management programs. Will analyze disability data to identify trends in order to implement loss control and loss prevention measures. Oversees case management, through subordinates in assisting employees, managers and supervisors regarding disability matters, including reasonable accommodation and the interactive process. Creates and recommends to campus leadership policy and process improvements regarding University disability issues. Oversees training and education of managers and supervisors regarding disability issues. Coordinates programs and services with other faculty and staff programs.

Oversees daily coordination and management of a comprehensive loss control program (Vocational Rehabilitation, Workers' Compensation, General Liability, Professional Liability, et cetera).
  • Develops, implements, and administers worker's compensation and disability management programs, which encompasses: Worker's Compensation, Disability program management, Transitional Return to Work (TRTW) programs, and the Work Strong Program. Campus wide program management and compliance activities designed to promote health and safety of employees and reduce financial risks. Reviews, examines, and resolves Workers' Compensation claims with assistance from TPA, investigator, and legal counsel. Monitors employees' recovery to achieve medically approved return to work on limited or full duty status.

Defines, implements and assists in the operation of effective loss prevention and control programs that meet departmental needs and result in effective cost controls and reduction of claims.

Fulfills management and oversight responsibility for organization's claims administration.
  • Works directly with worker's compensation Third Party Administrator (TPA) to resolve claims, return employees to work and avoid lawsuits. Manages leaves of absence program to ensure quality and compliance with applicable policies and legal standards. Resolves complex leave of absence matters or problems, in conjunction with Central HR and departmental HR representatives. Will carry a caseload and assist staff directly with cases.
