Department Custom Scope
Under close supervision of the area supervisor, perform routine animal husbandry tasks. Duties include the cleaning, feeding, and watering of laboratory animals; the cleaning of cages/enclosures and related ancillary equipment; and the maintenance of animal care areas.

High school diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Work experience evidencing reliability and the capacity to learn and assume responsibility for the routine animal caretaking functions may be substituted for high school education, on the basis of one year of work experience for one year of education. Required

Animal Husbandry a. Perform basic animal husbandry duties while observing established guidelines and SOP's for proper care and welfare of the animals. b. Provide water to the laboratory animals through automatic and manual watering systems. c. Feed the appropriate prescribed amount of feed per animal species. d. Observe laboratory animals and report any unexpected behavioral or physical abnormalities. e. Assist in housing of newly arrived animals, including the preparation of cage identification cards. f. Attend meetings and on-the-job training classes on laboratory animal husbandry procedures. g. Perform euthanasia on all animal species under the supervision of the Clinical Veterinarian. h. Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Cleaning & Sanitizing a. Transfer laboratory animals from dirty to clean cages with appropriate clean bedding. b. Clean and wash cages, cage racks, trays, pans, water bottles, and sipper tubes through automatic and manual washing processes. c. Dispose the animal refuse and soiled bedding using covered transport carts/bins to the refuse bins at the loading dock. d. Clean and sanitize animal quarters and adjacent areas as per established procedures and cleaning schedules. e. Attend on-the-job training classes on cleaning and sanitation procedures.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge/Skill/Ability Requirement
Ability to lift 50 pounds. Required
Ability to work independently following general directions/ training to provide animal care. Required
Ability to read, speak, and write English. Required
Ability to work in an animal research environment which requires continuous contact with animals. Required
Ability to communicate well with other animal technicians, investigators, etc. Required
Ability to euthanize rats and mice using CO2 chambers. Must be able to follow the procedures for euthanasia including the use of the CO2 chamber, as well as be able to ascertain that death has occurred. Knowledge of appropriate labeling and disposal of the animals euthanized, including hazardous animals. Required
Knowledge of and the ability to apply the concept of contamination control practices. Including but not limited to engineering, administrative, and procedural controls for the containment of pathogens, including disinfection, and waste handling methods appropriate for work in hazardous containment facilities up to a BSL-2. Preferred
Ability to recognize health problems in laboratory animals and provide various types of routine treatments following training/ direction by other animal technicians. Preferred
