Department Custom Scope
Under the direction of the Associate Director of the Exploration Center for Innovative Teaching and Engagement (XCITE), the Instructional Designer 1 serves focuses on supporting XCITE instructional design and faculty development efforts; performs as an academic and instructional specialist in the adaptation of emerging pedagogical strategies and educational technologies; and acts as a liaison with the larger campus community, particularly in creating online learning activities and courses aligned with best practices in student-centered, active, authentic, and connected learning experiences. In this capacity, the instructional designer will work individually and participate in cross-functional teams, to help facilitate high-impact projects and programs that align with the UCR Strategic Plan and of Academic Excellence, Access, Diversity, and Engagement.

Key Responsibilities

Description % Time
Assists more senior staff members to determine methods for delivery of course content and learns to utilize technology that promotes learner engagement and knowledge in accordance with well-defined procedures and schedules.
  • Works closely with other instructional designers to assist with conducting a course needs analysis for hybrid, online, and face-to-face instruction, identifying available technical resources, defining best methods & tools for learning engagement and assessment, and work within set deadlines. May use XCITEs quality assurance checklist to ensure course standards.

Works under direct supervision and receives detailed instructions on all assignments.
  • This position reports to the Senior Learning Experience Analyst in support of Instructional design and student engagement needs. Daily activity may focus on, but is not limited to course design support, learning assessment strategies, use of instructional technology tools, and XCITE faculty professional program assistance.

Assist with testing of content and tools to meet ADA requirements in accordance with defined standards.
  • Duties include using the American Disabilities Act guidelines to ensure visual, hearing, motor, and cognitive disabilities are addressed in course design and instructional materials to offer an equitable learning experience.

Develops instructional design skills to support learning activities and assessments of limited complexity.
  • Stays abreast of current and upcoming instructional design methods and tools. Makes proposals to XCITE leadership on the adoption of such methods and tools when appropriate.

Monitors course progress during instructional term.
  • In collaboration with faculty and senior instructional designers, Monitoring of the course and learning module functionality; in particular, multimedia functionality, faculty needs for exam proctoring training, and the use of Canvas tools.
