Custom Scope
Using knowledge and skills as a seasoned, experienced Student Services professional, performs the full range of duties and responsibilities within a Student Life specialization. Assesses situations and determines appropriate action or referral. Works independently under general supervision to provide information and interpretation of complex policies, procedures and regulations. Identifies and responds to student needs for programs, services, and crisis intervention.

Department Custom Scope
Under the guidance of the Basic Needs Director, the Basic Needs Housing Specialist is responsible for providing services to all University of California, Riverside students who are currently experiencing homelessness or are housing displaced. The incumbent's primary responsibility is to support students in accessing and identifying temporary and permanent housing solutions, and to establish meaningful connections with campus and community housing partners.

Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training. Required
Master's degree. Preferred
Masters degree in social work, community health, higher education, human services, or related field. Preferred

Experience Requirements

4 - 7 years of related experience. Required
Previous experience with basic needs initiatives in higher education. Preferred
Experience in interviewing, engagement, assessment, planning and advocacy Required
Experience working with multiple stakeholders to develop a common vision and implementation plan. Preferred
Experience with data collection, analysis, and reporting. Required

Key Responsibilities

Description % Time
Independently resolves moderate complex individual cases regarding student affairs or student life.
  • Facilitate emergency housing intake process and follow up. Work with student to develop and progress on goal plans according to individual goals and objectives. Maintain contact with emergency housing students on a regular basis, appropriate to their particular status and need. Documents client interaction and maintain accurate paperwork/reports, attends regular case management meetings and other specified meetings/trainings as required.

Work alongside Basic Needs Director to develop and implement procedures and policies related to students experiencing houseless/homelessness. Develops and updates resource guide for community based housing resources. Use US Department of Housing and Development (HUD) tools and ensure compliance with data standards and record-keeping as required by HUD.

Provides recommendations, reports, and metrics on feasibility of new and current programs.

Develops and maintains relationships with internal and external organization stakeholders critical to program success.
  • Establish community and campus housing partnerships. Make referrals to community and campus support resources and services as appropriate and support students in navigating this process.

Must possess or obtain a Valid CA Drivers License in accordance with the California Department of Motor Vehicles, if driving a university/personal vehicle for university related business. Required
