Provides the full range of assessment, counseling, and advice to targeted students, and makes referrals to organization and community resources. Works independently, receiving guidance on complicated problems/situations.

Department Custom Scope
The Academic Specialist provides multicultural academic counseling across disciplines and colleges/schools to "at risk" populations (e.g., low-income, first-generation college, underrepresented populations, etc.) in preparation for medical school curriculum, USMLE and academic success. Provides assistance to medical students on most complicated and sensitive issues. Advises organization about student needs as necessary. Works with Director of Academic Success to plan, develop, and administer specialized and complex programs and projects that are designed to enhance student success in medical school.

Key Responsibilities

Conducts comprehensive analyses of students' issues and needs and provides solutions and alternatives to problem areas.
  • Works with Director of Academic Support to plan, develop, and administer specialized and complex programs and projects that are designed to enhance student success in medical school.

Provide multicultural counseling to PRIME-ABC program students and assist them with identifying strategies for academic success.

Works with academic departments, faculty, and department management to help resolve specific student academic issues.

Coordinates the development, editing, and publication of academic journals, program websites, brochures, and marketing materials.
  • Assists with research of student programs and outcomes and with grant writing and reports.

Knowledge/Skill/Ability Requirement
Familiarity with disability laws, FERPA, and HIPSS laws and regulations. Required
Knowledge of trends and issues facing low-income and first-generation college, underrepresented, disadvantaged, physically challenged, and under prepared students in higher education. Required
Knowledge and experience in researching, compiling and analyzing data, and generating reports. Required
Knowledge of the methodologies used to enhance student achievement, such as collaborative teaching/learning models, strategies for effective counseling and peer mentoring, small group facilitation and training, coaching, mentoring, and advocacy. Required
Knowledge and experience in analyzing complex situations and identifying solutions for problem-solving; skills and experience in developing and administering programs designed to meet the diverse needs of students. Required
Knowledge of federal, state, and local requirements to provide for access, health, confidentiality, and safety; legal and ethical issues governing the delivery of counseling services. Required
