Department Custom Scope
Under direction of the PI (Perring) and Cooperator Dr. Carmen Gispert, this position will support several research projects taking place in the Coachella Valley Agricultural Region. The incumbent will be responsible for monitoring and changing traps for the South American Palm Weevil, a potentially serious pest of date palms in the Valley. In addition, incumbent will assist with date palm insect research and table grape studies as needed.

Key Responsibilities

Description % Time
Under general direction organize distribute, and maintain insect traps for South American palm weevil. Traps will be serviced with the appropriate compounds that attract weevils to the traps South American palm weevil will be counted and data will be forwarded to UCR for inputting into spread sheet. Must independently travel to and from various research sites.

Work with PI in date palm insect research, changing traps, counting insects and mites, and spraying dates.

Work with Cooperator on table grape and wine grape research. Count insects in the field and enter data for analysis.

Assist PI and Cooperator with other insect issues that are identified through the time period of this appointment.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge/Skill/Ability Requirement
Familiarity with crops grown in the Coachella Valley and the location of citrus and grape vineyards in the Valley. Required
Familiar with the roads that intersect the agricultural fields in the Coachella Valley Required
Skilled at identifying palm weevil insects, and other insects that may be caught in traps. Required
Skill in keeping detailed records of trap catches and forwarding data to UCR in an organized format. Required
Ability to work in the hot climatic and other adverse weather conditions in the Coachella Valley. Required
Able to work weekends as needed. Required
Must be able to climb ladders to reach dates on palm trees. Required
Must be able to lift 40 lbs independently. Required
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Preferred
Experience working with date palms Preferred
