Generic Scope
Provides direct supervision typically to professionals or skilled technical employees. Functions as advisor to unit and administration. Analyzes and resolves problems, interprets policies (e.g., fiscal management, HR, contracts and grants, resource management in defined areas) and demonstrates solid subject matter knowledge. Exercises judgment within defined procedures and policies to determine appropriate action. Supervises staff to assure accountability and stewardship of department resources (operational, financial, and human) in compliance with departmental goals and objectives.

Custom Scope
Supervises staff Library Professionals and Library Assistants who are performing complex library duties and responsibilities. Provides direction to subordinates on policies and practices that often do not have clear guidelines. May also supervise students. Responsible for the day-to-day operations of the unit. Work is performed independently within a framework of established guidelines. Exercises initiative, originality, and judgment in applying established library principles and practices to new and unusual problems, OR supervises students and Library Assistants who are performing routine and/or largely operational duties as part of the overall operations of a library AND spends a significant portion of the time personally performing duties indicative of the Library Professional 3 level, where duties and assignments are defined by broad objectives and involve a high degree of difficulty in subject and/or functional specializations.

Supervises students and Library Assistants who are performing routine and / or largely operational duties as part of the overall operations of a library. Responsible for day-to-day operations. Provides technical guidance and resolves issues such as general communications and complaints, processing materials, and bibliographic checking.

Key Responsibilities

Description % Time
Oversees staff performing, or personally performs, duties and assignments that involve a high degree of difficulty in subject and/or functional specialization.
  • Provides day-to-day administration of the unit providing resource sharing services within the Access Services Department. Provides vision and administers efficient and effective operations through engagement in strategic planning, team leadership, assessment, continuous improvement and reporting. Provides leadership to supervised staff and fosters a motivating and engaging environment. Establishes goals for supervised staff and works continuously with them to promote achievement of established goals. Effectively delegates, empowers supervised staff to make independent decisions at appropriate operational levels and holds them accountable for successful completion of assignments. Provides direction and assistance to subordinates on difficult and complex operational library services matters.

Sets performance expectations, monitors performance, and recommends employee selection, corrective action, and dismissals.
  • Train staff to perform complex bibliographic searching, verify complex citations, determine holding libraries, and navigate ILL management software and bibliographic tools. Serve as a resource for staff members who encounter problems with complex citations. Supervises students and Library Assistant staff who perform routine duties and responsibilities according to established guidelines, procedures and policies.

As supervisor operates as the functional expert in the specialization, such as circulation and reserves, collection, reference, interlibrary services, cataloging, monographic processing, or serials processing.

Manages schedules to ensure adequate coverage for specialization(s).
  • Manages staff and student schedules to support resource sharing service?s needs.

Manage and update borrowing and lending settings in various ILL software and websites, including OCLC. Create and maintain data, consortia groups and paths, schedules, lending policies, and other information, and access and update as appropriate.

Maintains knowledge of current industry trends and performs continuous assessment of innovative methodologies, technologies and approaches. Identifies opportunities for improvement and communicates them to Library leadership. Represents UC, Riverside on UC-wide committees and working groups.
