Department Custom Scope
Under direction, provide greenhouse support activities for the (CNAS) College of Natural Agricultural Sciences. Will perform day-to-day greenhouse semi-skilled activities in a wide array of greenhouses, lath houses and screen houses. Will include procurement of supplies, fulfilling work orders, keeping records, and steam pasteurizing.

Key Responsibilities

Description % Time
Greenhouse Operations: -Under direction, incumbent maintains CNAS-assigned plant growth facilities including greenhouses, lath houses, screen houses in a manner consistent with generally accepted good management practices. -Submits Work Orders when needed and follow up depending on the nature of the work. -Facilitates maintenance of proper plant growth, including temperatures, light quality, growing media, and nutrients; recognize signs of plant stress. - Uses generally accepted good greenhouse techniques and sanitation to avoid the introduction and/or spread of pests and diseases to plants. -Assists in the care and daily operation of all plant growth facilities including greenhouses, lath houses, screen houses and all related machinery and equipment. - Assists users in establishing and maintaining watering systems including automatic irrigation systems. - Monitors inventory of supplies and equipment under their cover, ordering when necessary. - Keeps accurate records with strict attention to detail when necessary. -Provides backup and/or assists pest management technician when needed. -Assist with scouting greenhouse for insect and disease infestation and report. - Ensures that daily supplies of soil mixtures are available and that plant waste and soil are disposed of properly. - Assists researchers, when needed but not limited to, filling pots, transplanting plants, and planting cuttings/seed into appropriate containers. - Applies greenhouse whitewash as requested. - Maintains DPR Qualified Applicator Certificate. Will be required to use university vehicles to transport supplies and equipment between various department locations.

Maintenance of Facilities: -Assists, in greenhouse to scout facilities for arthropod, disease, weed and rodent infestations. -Maintain greenhouses including walkways, benches, greenhouse floors, filters, apply sanitizers, and in common areas, remove/dispose of pots, soil and plants, and steam sterilizing soil and/or trash. - Ensures that workspace, tools, and vehicles are maintained in proper working order.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge/Skill/Ability Requirement
Knowledge in pest management including pest identification, pesticide application equipment, general use of pesticides, phototoxicity and the safe handling of pesticides and other hazardous materials. Required
Ability to organize work activities; coordinate and communicate effectively and professionally with subordinates, colleagues, supervisors, and researchers using tact and diplomacy. Required
Knowledge of and experience with Windows computer software, web technologies, and e-mail. Required
Must understand basic plant needs/requirements such as temperatures, nutrients, light quality, day length. Required
Skill in operation of all equipment associated with greenhouses, head houses, general research sites and pesticide application and storage. Required
Ability to coordinate and prioritize with a high degree of accuracy and organization; detail-oriented, good problem solving ability. Skills in oral and written communication. Required
