Custom Scope
Serves as an expert or lead development professional in a specialized area such as major/principal gifts, gift planning or corporate/foundation relations, or a specific area that includes, or potentially includes, donors capable of making very significant contributions to a location. Maintains a portfolio of donor prospects that include the most influential, complex or highest rated donors. May have authority to make commitments and precedent-setting decisions regarding program design, development, and procedures. May oversee the work of professional and support staff. Position is expected to raise gift dollar amounts as established at each fundraiser specialization.

*Campus presence required with hybrid accommodations.* Under the general direction of the Sr. Executive Director, Central Programs, the Sr. Director of Development, Gift Planning will play an essential leadership role in the University's overall fundraising plan. The incumbent will be responsible for developing gift planning program strategy, enhancing program processes and policies, guiding the use of techniques and training resources, activating a portfolio of assigned prospects as well as contributing planned gift strategy for assigned prospects in colleague portfolios, and managing the Gift Planning team. The incumbent is responsible for building a pipeline of planned gift prospects nationwide and beyond, ultimately increasing deferred and outright giving by individuals for the benefit of colleges, departments, and programs campus-wide. The Sr. Director is the lead fundraiser for the Office of Gift Planning responsible for qualifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding major and principal gift donors and prospects. Utilizing available data and analytical tools, the Senior Director will oversee the strategy, creation, and implementation of the comprehensive marketing and communications plan designed to solicit planned gifts for the university; and the incumbent will ensure close collaboration between the Office of Gift Planning and University Relations staff, internal stakeholders, web developers, and outside contractors/vendors. Through direct fundraising, training, and collaborative efforts, deferred gift receipts should reach a significant percentage (25%-40%) of the annual fundraising goal for the UC Riverside Foundation.

Qualify major gift prospects and solicit gifts directly.
  • Manages a portfolio of assigned gift planning prospects, devising and implementing strategy for major and principal gift level donors from qualification to stewardship. Responsible for successful oversight and management of complicated deferred and outright gifts including gifts of real estate and other appreciated assets, charitable trusts and annuities, bequests, in-kind donations, stock and wire transfers, beneficiary designations, and more.

Manages a portfolio of donor prospects that include the most influential, complex or highest capacity-rated donors. May maintain and manage portfolio(s) of senior campus leadership including the Chancellor and Vice Chancellor.

May oversee the work of professional and support staff.
  • Overseeing the strategy, creation, and implementation of the comprehensive marketing and communications plan designed to solicit planned gifts for the university; utilizing data-driven approaches and ensuring articulated goals are met annually. Tailor communication and events for the members of the Watkins Society, the legacy giving society of the U.C. Riverside Foundation.

Place collaboration with campus colleagues at the highest level, providing gift planning expertise, support, and training when necessary. Advise on, initiate, and actively monitor gift planning strategies for top prospects across all academic and program areas. Identify creative opportunities for blended gifts and collaborative approaches with development colleagues.

Advocates for staff resources and budget enhancements for the Gift Planning program. Sets annual goals, reviews trends and data analytics to inform strategic budget reallocations, and monitors program ROI making sure to stay on pace to achieve shared goals. Serves as the primary steward of the Gift Planning budget, pre-approves team reimbursements, and oversees expenditures.

Provide consultation and direction to development staff across campus in developing solicitation strategies using gift planning techniques.

Serve as the University lead on matters of trust and planned gift administration in partnership with members of the UCR Foundation accounting team, gift administration team, the UC Office of the President, Real Estate Services, and Campus Counsel.
