Department Custom Scope
The Art Lab & Gallery Assistant - Lab Ast 3 reports directly to the Sculpture Lab & Painting/Drawing Lab Supervisor (SRA III) for the Department of ART, with a dotted line reporting to the Financial and Administrative Officer for the Department. This position is responsible for assisting Art Lab Supervisors in the art labs, supporting and adherence to department and campus standards for the art labs within the Art department and the Phyllis Gill Gallery. This position will serve as a backup to our Sculpture, Painting, Drawing, and Photography Lab Managers. This position is also responsible for organizing, planning, and purchasing of required materials for the Phyllis Gill Gallery. This position works with the faculty, students, and classes to assist with install and deinstall of art exhibitions at the Phyllis Gill Gallery. Included in these responsibilities are working closely with other staff, Art Lab Supervisors, Art Faculty and Staff, etc. regarding general facilities maintenance, safety, and security of the space. This position is a limited position with a maximum of 1,000 hours worked with a potential to change to career status.

Degree Requirement
Graduation from high school or a general Education diploma and two years of lab experience or two years of college in related courses or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position. Required
Bachelors Degree in Art, or related fields. Knowledge of contemporary art, sculpture, painting/drawing, photography, gallery exhibitions, and related tools, equipment, and technology or related experience. Preferred

Key Responsibilities

Description % Time
Lab Assistance & Technical/Instructional Support Assist Lab Supervisors with responsibilities including: safety, class orientations, art technical training and demonstrations, safety inspections, safety records, chemical storage and waste management, quarterly lab turnovers, quarterly supply runs, and locker checkouts. Assists Lab Supervisors in the maintenance and repair of tools and equipment, and facilities maintenance. Ensure and promote safety culture with all lab users, including faculty, instructors, TAs, and students. Ensure labs are operated and maintained in a safe manner and in compliance with lab and UC policies, federal and state laws, and requirements. This position is responsible for assisting with instructional support including tool/equipment check out during class times as assigned by Supervisor (SRA III), assisting with setting up and clean up of class demonstrations, giving demonstrations as directed by Supervisor (SRA III), directing students in safety, PPE and safe use of Art Lab tools and equipment, advising Faculty and students on safety, tool use, and their research.

Gallery & Exhibition Support This position will support the Department of Art Phyllis Gill Gallery. Responsible for oversight of installations at the Phyllis Gill Gallery, facilitating installations through CHASS Facilities, addressing needs of the gallery and escalating any issues to Supervisor (SRA III), and overall facility maintenance and upkeep. Responsible to ensure all installs meet department standards and guidelines. This position is responsible for managing gallery AV and security. Responsible for managing social media for Phyllis Gill Gallery and documenting all exhibitions at the Phyllis Gill Gallery. Will also seek estimates, place orders for materials and supplies necessary to successfully meet demands and budgetary constraints, and the ability to work within a limited budget. This position is responsible for the Phyllis Gill Gallery waivers, space maintenance and light repair, inventory, and purchasing. This position is responsible for coordinating facility access with vendors at the Phyllis Gill Gallery to ensure repairs, HVAC maintenance, inspections, etc. Will work directly with Supervisor to coordinate and facilitate both minor and major public facility upkeep, repairs, and renovations.

Other Duties as Assigned May be required to supervise student staff. May assist with event planning, room set up, and control for various department classes and events. Additional- Assisting faculty within classroom space, and questions. Assist with department projects, as directed by Supervisor (SRA III), etc.
