Custom Scope
Using skills as a seasoned, experienced student services professional, provides the full range of student services within an organization such as an academic department, school, or college. Independently advises students and resolves student services-related issues on the full range of academic issues inherent within the organization. Advises faculty and management on a variety of student issues. Works with the department's/school's/college's management to recommend changes to policies, practices, and procedures. Guidance on issues requiring in-depth knowledge of specialized programs is provided by offices specializing in those fields, e.g., the financial aid office, graduate division, or student learning center, OR by the chair/dean and faculty of the department/school/college. May administer funds for student programs.

Department Custom Scope
Provides immigration advising and support services to promote the success, wellness, and academic goals of international students, dependents, and graduated students pursing Optional Practical Training (OPT) and Academic Training. Serves as Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO), independently providing expert immigration and regulatory advising to international students. Can serve as lead Career Empowerment Coordinator or as lead Coordinator for SEVIS registration. Actively advises faculty and staff across campus by providing in-depth guidance on matters relevant to international students. In collaboration with the ISS team, designs and delivers professional intercultural and support programs that facilitate the educational, professional, and personal success of international students at UCR. Contributes to outreach and campus training that provides faculty, staff, and students with the resources and skills needed to effectively contribute to an increasingly international campus.

Key Responsibilities

Provides advice and assistance to students and scholars regarding complex U.S. visa and immigration procedures, compliance issues, and employment eligibility/authorization. Coordinates and implements programs and workshops to support and retain international students/scholars. Makes referrals to off campus and community resources.
  • Independently interprets and applies complex immigration regulations for the campus. Advises students, faculty, and staff across camps on complex matters related to international students. Serves as Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO); conducts individual, group, phone, and online advising for international students, dependents, and graduated students. Maintains relationships with key stakeholders and government entities. Can serve as coordinator for the career empowerment and tax workshop series and as the coordinator for quarterly SEVIS registration, depending on the needs of the office.

Plans, designs, and provides workshops for students, such as information about the organization, or academic strategies and enrichment programs.
  • Creates and designs workshops, online tutorials and videos for international students. Partners with other campus units to support students success and maintains connections with students who are graduated and are pursing their post completion employment in the United States. Cultivates and identifies on campus employment opportunities for international students. Develops, implements and evaluates comprehensive adjustment, integration and retention programs for international students.

Responsible for quarterly SEVIS registration and the management of the international student database. Responsible for monitoring student portals and data-link feeds and ensuring that the database reflects SEVIS RTI and that it is updated, accurate, and in compliance per federal regulations. Partners with Information Technology Services to ensure that the database is up-to-date and working properly. Monitors Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) alerts and records. Produces and generates reports from ISSM, Banner, Cognos, and SEVIS. Manages confidential paper and electronic records in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and with Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and Department of State (DOS) regulations. Contributes to the development and distribution of office forms, videos, and online resource materials. Advises faculty and staff across campus on regulations pertaining to international students.

Academic Advising: Advises faculty on departmental/school/college and university policies and procedures; reviews students' progress and advises students and faculty on requirements for degree/program completion; identifies students with progression problems and recommends interventions; devises curriculum planning in collaboration with chair/ dean and faculty, and with other departments.
  • Meets with international students facing sensitive academic, cultural, personal, and immigration matters. Makes referrals and recommendations for interventions related to retention, adjustment, and maintenance of status. Makes recommendations for changes to practices impacting international students. Proactively reviews international student records and reports for full-time registration status and progress.

Student Orientation: Oversees and may conduct orientations of new students.
  • Is actively engaged with International Student Orientation, partnering with the ISS team. Plans and develops workshops, presentations, videos, and online modules for Orientation.

Assists with projects and tasks that help the department meet its strategic goals and represents the department on campus wide committees and work-groups as needed. In collaboration with the ISS team, proactively raises the awareness and visibility of international student support needs and successes across campus. Other duties as assigned.
