Custom Scope
Applies extensive knowledge of body donation protocols and processes to lead major program components of an anatomical donation program. Performs full range of all aspects of the body donation program. Demonstrates good judgement in allocating anatomical materials, as required by clinical educators, researchers, and clinics. Provides training to staff and students, provides and presents training materials.

Department Custom Scope
The Manager of the Gross Anatomy Laboratory is responsible for the management and execution of the Anatomy Program (AP), any dedicated personnel, and managing administrative records and teaching laboratory facilities, specimens, and anatomical models for Anatomy under Undergraduate Medical Education. Under the oversight of the Pre-Clerkship Medical Education Associate Dean (AD), he/she will manage/insure that the AP is in compliance with all institutional, local, state, and federal regulations; will maintain the teaching specimen inventory of the department; and will assist with the coordination of external entities utilizing the AP space and materials for outreach and educational purposes. The Manager of Gross Anatomy Laboratory will help to establish the UCR SOM Body Donor Program at UCR. He/she is responsible for the day to day functioning of the department including: acting as a receptionist and directing inquiries as appropriate; assisting Department faculty with submission of grant proposals; The Manager of Gross Anatomy Laboratory will be serving as a liaison between Anatomy and other internal and external entities. He/she is fiscally responsible for formulating, proposing, and working within, an AP budget for ordering / purchasing supplies, equipment, and specimens for the Gross Anatomy Laboratory; for any other personnel expenses (i.e., technician/administrative support), through collaboration with the AP Faculty Lead and AD.

Key Responsibilities

Oversees the maintenance of technical policy and procedure manual. Leads and trains the anatomical services staff to create anatomical materials.
  • In conjunction with the AP Faculty Lead, develops and implements policies, internal controls, goals, and standard operating procedures for the Anatomy Program with respect to student interaction and scheduling and processes. Manages/supervise student assistant worker(s)/volunteer(s) in a human gross anatomy laboratory context. In conjunction with the AP Faculty Lead designs and operates a virtual anatomy facility and expanded surgical anatomy facility.

Preserve and recover anatomical material to create teaching materials for education and research.
  • Responsible for maintaining cadaver acquisition, use, and disposition schedule to ensure continuous supply for Gross Anatomy 1st, 3rd and 4th year elective. Responsible for overseeing labs and demonstrations involving the cadaver lab or cadaveric material, in conjunction with the AP Faculty Lead. Supervise dissectors and provide teaching support for human gross anatomy, including preparation of facilities for practical exams. Assists anatomists and students with cadaver dissections. Assists surgeons and students during surgical procedures with equipment and instruments. Prepares operating rooms/stations for open and laproscopic surgery. Operates and maintains electronic and computer systems related to virtual anatomy facility. Provides PPE and oversees its proper use in the facilities. Insure integrity and confidentiality of all student records.

Monitors work flow and provides technical oversight and guidance to staff and medical students of a major component of the anatomical donation program.
  • Acts as a liaison between students and faculty and administration and staff, regarding access to gross anatomy cadaver dissection lab and preparation areas; access to and usage of cadaveric specimens; directing students to needed supplies or providing needed support relating to cadaver handling. Operate, maintain and train faculty/staff/students on electronic and computer systems use related to virtual anatomy for AP. Conduct minor repairs of collections/models for AP and replace as necessary.

Coordinates purchasing of all necessary anatomical lab equipment and supplies.
  • Works with UME admin team and SOM Business Operations to order supplies and equipment as needed for gross anatomy lab teaching and operation. Interfaces with Business Operations (BO) Purchasing to submit requests for internal personnel reimbursements; guest lecturer compensation and teaching assistant compensation. Develops and maintains inventory of appropriate dissection/surgical tools. Responsible for managing/tracking the annual Anatomy lab asset inventory.

Coordinates with supervisor and faculty to address changing needs in Medical Education, Research and/or Community Outreach Programs.
  • Works with AD, AP Faculty Lead, anatomists and surgeons to establish a curriculum for the virtual anatomy facility. Works with internal entities for student assessment; and faculty, staff, and facility evaluation. Works with AP Faculty Lead and internal/external entities utilizing facilities for outreach, research and other education opportunities. In conjunction with AP Faculty Lead, AD of Pre-Clerkship and Business Operations personnel, resolves concerns of the faculty, staff and students concerning cadaveric specimens or facilities. Works with unit FAO to identify process improvement opportunities. Work with internal entities for student assessment; and faculty, staff, and facility evaluation for Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI).

Reviews request for anatomical materials and specimen, and ensure that the materials meet the quality demands.
  • Conducts annual inventory of departmental skeletal collections and anatomical models. Identifies annual needs for replacement of damaged/worn out skeletal specimens and anatomical models and expansion of teaching collections of the same. Monitors condition of departmental skeletal collections and anatomical models and conduct minor repairs as necessary. Maintains facility equipment and dissection/surgical instruments.

Administers donor records and database, from intake through disposition of the cadaveric materials.
  • Ensures integrity and confidentiality of all student records and cadaver records. Ensures the cadavers are respected, and donors' privacy and identities are protected.

Coordinates or performs transportation, blood draw procedures, serological testing, storage, chemical preservation, and general care and handling of anatomical materials.
  • Oversees proper storage and disposal of skeletal collections, anatomical models, and specimens, and access for faculty, staff and students as directed by the faculty lead for Anatomy. Coordinates/arranges transportation of donated bodies. Maintains communication with identified alternative cadaver sources at other medical schools and institutions in and out of state.

Ensures proper use of all chemicals in laboratory facilities, including the preparation of preservative, preparation and maintenance fluids.
  • Works with hazardous materials and prepares chemical solutions. Works with UCR Custodial Services and Environmental Health & Safety to ensure gross anatomy facilities in clean working order in a manner compliant with all governmental regulations relating to hazardous material exposure and confidentiality.

Develops, with the AP Faculty Lead, the budgeting for operating the Anatomy Program, provides appropriate information to and communicates regularly regarding all gross anatomy lab, and cadaver program, budgets and accounting. Assists AP Faculty Lead in development of annual departmental budget relating to cadaver usage, gross anatomy dissection lab, Surgical Anatomy and other anatomical models and specimens. In conjunction with the Administrative Assistant to the Department, maintains all accounting relating to cadaver acquisition and usage, including, but not limited to, transportation, laboratory preparation, teaching supplies and equipment, and disposition. Compile and submit regular reports to the AD.

Attends state or regional meetings relating to cadaver allocations and medical education. Works with, as a participating member of, the Willed Body Program interest group of the American Association of Clinical Anatomists (AACA). Applies for grants related to Human Anatomy education and research.
