Custom Scope
Responsible for all activities associated with multiple/comprehensive technical aspects of theater productions, including procedures and administering/monitoring budgetary expenditures consistent with budgetary allocations, and training of staff/students. May be responsible for maintenance of theater venues, shops, and storage, including facilities and stage equipment, tools and materials, and establishing and ensuring implementation of operational procedures for all users within the facilities.

Department Custom Scope
The Scene Shop Supervisor / Head Carpenter oversees and manages set construction and installation for all theatrical productions and film/television projects for the Department of Theatre, Film, and Digital Production. They support and implement the technical and administrative needs required to efficiently execute the day-to-day operation of the scene shop. Additionally they are the primary point of contact and lead all activities associated with the build, installation, running, strike, and maintenance of scenery, properties, rigging, and related tools and equipment. The Scene Shop Supervisor / Head Carpenter directly supervises and assigns technical personnel to various phases of production, and reviews and evaluates student and employee work for grading or advancement. They help to plan long-range strategies for production and departmental operations, have a high working knowledge of scenery construction, structural design, engineering, construction process and styles, and exhibit a passion for the art of theatre and film. The Scene Shop Supervisor / Head Carpenter reports to the Production Director for the Performing Arts and collaborates with production staff, faculty, and other campus constituents to achieve departmental goals.

Key Responsibilities

Description % Time
Constructs and installs theatrical production elements in multiple production areas (lights, sound, video, costumes, hair/make-up, properties, scenery, scenic treatment, etc.) from design and design specification provided by theatrical designers.
  • Plans, supervises, and assumes general responsibility for the load-in and rigging of scenery and draperies in the theatre and for film productions. Sets up and rigs individual pieces of scenery and draperies according to plans. Constructs scenery and properties as required. Oversees technical aspects of film production including transportation to locations, shooting location surveys, installation of scenic elements, and coordination of special effects.

Determines construction techniques and details of construction/installation.
  • Drafts working drawings in Vectorworks from set designs, including groundplans, sections, scenic build drawings, rigging points, and other technical drawings as needed to show how all scenery and properties are to be built, rigged, and operated. Analyzes the stresses and loads on scenic elements to ensure the safety and structural integrity of the completed set and all rigging systems. Determines construction techniques and details of construction/installation and creates patterns, jigs, and samples.

Trains students in laboratory setting associated with theatrical production; may evaluate students in laboratory work.
  • Supervises and trains staff and student crews in the construction, installation, running, and strike of scenery, properties, and scenic elements from working drawings. Is present at designated rehearsals, technical rehearsals, dress rehearsals, performances, and film shoots as a staff supervisor for student crews.

Attends technical/dress rehearsals and consults with directors/designers regarding notes, changes, and/or additions.

Administers budgets, ensuring that expenditures are within agreed upon budgetary limits.
  • Estimates the costs of materials and labor for constructing, painting, and finishing scenery and props. Orders all materials and supplies related to scenery and properties.

Maintains shop facilities and equipment and coordinates with senior managers regarding theater facilities and property maintenance.
  • Assists in the orderly storage of all equipment, materials, and supplies for all department shops. Helps to maintain department theatre spaces, film studios, and storage spaces, including all equipment, props, and rehearsal furniture contained within. Assists in administering the storage of theatrical and film production elements, including making judgments as to the salvage and disposal of materials.

Recommends and approves expenditures for equipment; advises on planning of major alterations of existing facilities or development of new facilities.

Establishes procedures and trains users in safe, proper practices of theatrical construction and installation and in safe use, proper handling, and maintenance of all machinery, power and hand tools, and other shop and theater equipment, power and hand tools, and other shop and theater equipment.
  • Additionally, maintains the department?s stage weapons and ensures their proper storage, liaisons with the UCR Police Department during weapon usage, trains students in the proper usage of stage weapons, and coordinates with production fight choreographers during rehearsals, technical rehearsals, dress rehearsals, performances, and film shoots.

Ensures professional and safe general shop conditions and operations, including fulfilling reporting and record-keeping requirements and all applicable rules/regulations including federal, state, OSHA and CalOSHA guidelines and regulations.
  • Helps to ensure the health and safety of rehearsal and performance spaces and film shoot locations, and helps to resolve any issues surrounding the health and safety of students in rehearsals during rehearsals, technical rehearsals, dress rehearsals, performances, and film shoots.
