Department Custom Scope
The Access Services Desk Assistant interprets and administers circulation/reserve policies as they apply to library patrons. Provides circulation services to a wide variety of patrons on a regular basis in accordance with the desk schedule. Must be able to work Monday 7:15a-4:15p, Tuesday-Thursday 9:15a-6:15p, Saturday 8:45a-5:15p. Scheduled work hours are subject to change and may vary based on business needs, finals week, summer and intersession periods.

Key Responsibilities

Description % Time
Access Services Public Service Responsibilities: Staffs Public Services Desk as scheduled and provides accurate and courteous service. May be scheduled to cover a service desk at another UCR Library. Maintains current knowledge of and performs Service Desk functions. Anticipates patron needs and provides accurate and courteous service to all patrons according to Access Public Service guidelines. Maintains general knowledge of the UCR Library and campus in order to answer patron questions and assure the proper referral of patrons. Utilizes detailed knowledge of the Integrated Library System to process reserves and inter-library loan requests. Creates uncatalogued bibliographic records using Alma Fulfillment for personal course reserve material and on-the-fly records. Uses multiple online systems to determine the status of or information on patrons or materials as well as performing a variety of circulation functions. Maintains confidentiality of records as required by Library and University policy. Performs general Access Services functions, such as processing inter-library loan material, processing incoming course reserve requests and materials, de-processing course reserve material, and assisting with paging available material, shelving, shifting, and shelf-reading. Operates building alarm and public announcement (PA) system and reports and corrects problems associated with their use. Logs Access Services statistics on appropriate forms. Writes and distributes Security Report Forms.

Individual & Technical Responsibilities: Follows written procedures for opening the library facility on assigned days. Monitors Circulation/Reserve Desk operations and student assistants. May assist in training new student or staff employees on desk functions, policies and procedures. Functions, in conjunction with the Security Services Unit and in the absence of the Saturday supervisor, as the coordinator and contact for emergency situations occurring on Saturdays. Uses judgment to resolve those situations falling outside of established procedures. Assists with the review and update of training and procedure manuals, in conjunction with the Desk Supervisor and Unit Manager. Processes new or replacement materials and supplies for circulation. Coordinates library study carrels and secured user storage space assignments.

General Department & Library Responsibilities: Follows Access Services Public Service Guidelines. Participates in staff meetings and committees as assigned. Serves as a Building Emergency Staff for the Library. May serve as an Acting Building Supervisor for Emergency Conditions (BSEC) if a BSEC is unavailable. Acts as a backup staff member in emergency staffing situations during evenings, weekends, and holidays in a Circulation/Reserve Services Unit. Monitors relevant electronic mailing lists and other formal communication mechanisms.

Ability to work flexible hours for staffing in back up situations including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Hours may vary from quarter to quarter. Required
Must pass FBI/Department of Justice background check Required
This position is designated as a Mandated Reporter and will be required to complete trainings and comply with CANRA. Required
