Generic Scope
Spends the majority of time (50% or more) achieving organizational objectives through the coordinated achievements of subordinate staff. Establishes departmental goals and objectives, functions with autonomy. Manages the accountability and stewardship of human, financial, and often physical resources in compliance with departmental and organizational goals and objectives. Ensures subordinate supervisors and professionals adhere to defined internal controls. Manages systems and procedures to protect departmental assets.

Custom Scope
Manages a discrete Student Affairs or Student Life & Development function and/or program. Formulates policies and procedures for the function. Develops the long and short term organizational goals of the unit. Represents the program internally and externally. Manages the operating budget and human resources of the program.

Department Custom Scope
The incumbent will engage the Student Life team in strategic planning, professional development and regular assessment of programatic initiatives. This role is critical to delivering a transformative student life experience at UCR. Leads large scale event planning for New Student Convocation and supports large scale events directly and indirectly through personnel management. This role will engage and connect with the surrounding local community, when appropriate. Supports free speech activity in collaboration with the Associate Dean and Assistant Dean of Students. Collaborates closely with areas across student affairs such as the Identity Centers, Residential Life, Highlander Student Union, Associated Students, Health, Wellness, and Safety as well as the University of California Police Department. This role must also work well with campus partners across the institution on an array of high level committees on behalf of Student Life and Student Affairs. This role will provide leadership to the following areas: Orientation and New Student Programs, Associated Students Programming Board, Student Organizations, Fraternity and Sorority Involvement Center, Veterans Resource Center as well as Leadership and Service Programs. This portfolio may evolve in the future.

Key Responsibilities

Develops, interprets, and administers a Student Affairs or Student Life & Development program or function.
  • Provides strategic planning for the unit and assists in strategic planning for the Dean of Students and the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs. Co-leads the planning of the New Student Convocation with Events Management and ensures that there is an agenda and detailed follow up to ensure a successful new student convocation. Works with the surrounding local community to develop relationships and connects with community when appropriate.

Responsible for administering the budget for managed function.
  • Works collaboratively with the Financial and Administrative Manager to generate budget projects, plan for allocations, changes and ensure overall budgetary oversight is in alignment with unit, DOS and VCSA goals.

Makes decisions on performance, salary actions, hiring decisions and other human resources related issues of managed staff.
  • Works collaboratively with Student Affairs Human Resources colleagues to ensure that all decisions are in alignment with HR polices and processes.

Establishes and recommends changes to policies, practices, and procedures that affect the program/function.
  • Under the direction of the AVC/Dean of Students, this role will recommend revisions to existing polices, practices, and procedures that affect program function.
