Department Custom Scope
Reporting to the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and the UME and SA leadership, The Database Design Engineer will be responsible for laying down the foundation of all data and its architecture for all Undergraduate Medical Education (UME) and Student Affairs (SA) applications. This position will work closely with the Undergraduate Medical Education and Student Affairs departments, Office of Information Technology, and other departments to maximize the reporting for the Banner (student information system) system and other curriculum applications. The main focus is data design, data integration, and data reporting. Assesses a wide range of data requirements and applies relevant database techniques to create a robust architecture. After periodic intervals, they will also test to identify bugs or performance issues. Responsible for maintaining the database and ensuring it works smoothly without causing any disruption.

Works on moderately complex databases with appropriately normalized data structures using intermediate level database design and software techniques such as views, triggers and stored procedures. Resolves procedural and technical issues in the context of department policies and procedures. Works on database-related issues and projects of diverse scope, taking into account business practice and technical considerations and applying defined IT procedures and practices to database projects.
  • Lays down the foundation of a database and its architecture. Assesses a wide range of requirements and apply relevant database techniques to create a robust architecture. After periodic intervals, carries out testing to identify any bugs or performance issues. Tasked with maintaining the database and ensuring that it works smoothly without causing any disruption. Responsible for finding trends in data sets and developing algorithms to help make raw data more useful to the enterprise. Need to understand how to optimize data retrieval and how to develop dashboards, reports and other visualizations for stakeholders.

Implements performance tuning techniques including indexes and advanced SQL syntax. Proposes and implements enhancements that will improve the performance and reliability of the system. Applies database administration concepts to perform complex analysis and provides analysis for complex project, issues and concerns.
  • Extracts and acquires data from different sources, including the database ? it can be SQL Server, Google Looker, MySQL, Excel, or any other data storing or processing software. Applies algorithms on this data to assist UME and GME with productive data.
