Department Custom Scope
A unit within the portfolio of the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs, Chicano Student Programs (CSP) is an essential department that provides academic support services, mentoring/leadership development, co-and extra-curricular programming, K-14 outreach and non-academic counseling among other things, for all UC Riverside students with an emphasis on Chicano Latino scholars. In collaboration with the Director & Assistant Director, the program coordinator develops, plans, implements and evaluates programs, services, initiatives and activities for Chicano Student Programs (CSP). The Program Coordinator is responsible to plan, implement, market and evaluate cultural and education programs related to Chicano Latino students; coordinate outreach efforts targeted to K-12 and community college students; coordinate cross cultural programs with other campus departments; provide support and assistance to Chicano Latino student organizations; assist in recruitment, training and supervision of peer mentors with a focus on mentorship to Chicano/Latino students at large; and act as an advocate for student concerns. The incumbent independently analyzes campus wide needs to develop a programmatic response, serving as a subject matter expert pertaining to Chicano/Latino undergraduate and graduate student success. The Program Coordinator will be responsible for the student intern selection process, supervision, training and day-to-day work flow management for the interns, mentor volunteers and delegates.

Independently provides the full range of support services for a student program(s) and/or provides the full range of academic support services for a residential complex.
  • Develop, implement and coordinate a comprehensive set of social, cultural, educational development programs for the UC Riverside community, especially as related to Chicano/Latino students and community. Has programmatic responsibility in the recruitment, training and supervision for the Chicano Link Peer Mentor Program. Facilitate proactive, sustained, student-to-student interactions. Promote personal growth for program participants.

  • Serve as Chicano Student Programs liasion to Ethnic and Gender program collaborative efforts including new student Orientation and the annual Common Ground Retreat. Develop, implement and coordinate cross-cultural sessions to create awareness, encourage interaction, further understanding, and promote the education of Chicanos/Latinos and other members of the university community.

Provides ongoing transformational advising and development to student leaders participating in student government, co-curricular programs and/or organizations on a wide range of issues. Advises student leaders on complex and sensitive issues. Brings extensive knowledge to a student generated field of interest and supports, guides and mentors students in formulating projects related to those issues. Guides students in interaction with campus leaders and represents students on these issues when appropriate. Coaches student leaders on communication and leadership skills.
  • Provide support and assistance to Chicano/Latino student organizations in the areas of recognition, recruitment, program and event planning, accessing University resources, understanding and negotiating University policies and procedures, organizational development and enhancement, fundraising, promotion and marketing, and communication. Co-sponsor and incorporate programming of student organizations into the Chicano Student Program calendar wherever possible.

Coordinate outreach efforts targeted to Chicano/Latino K-12 and community college students, including but not limited to Community College Day, Chicano/Latino Youth Conference, PACE Summer Residential program and various school visits. Shape outreach activities to facilitate student development for undergraduate students who participate.

Provides recommendations, reports, and metrics on feasibility of new and current programs.

Administers a limited public service program, providing such services as working with outside agencies to refer students and develop programs to work in public service roles; identifying resources for student volunteer opportunities; matching student volunteers with outside public service agencies. Provides education, training and reflection opportunities to students engaged in public service.
  • Serve as Chicano Student Programs liaison to Mundo Living Learning Community and collaborate with Residential Life colleagues to support the efforts of the residential program.

Assist in making presentations to the UCR campus and surrounding communities to promote awareness and understanding of the issues facing the Chicano/Latino community, especially as related to higher education.

Act as an advocate for student concerns. With the staff provide effective leadership and assist others in responding to student needs, crises, and concerns. Provide one-on-one support and crisis management for students in distress. Refer students, faculty and staff to appropriate campus and community resources.
