Department Custom Scope
The Assistant Director is responsible for recruiting, advising, and supporting undergraduate and graduate students to participate in Education Abroad programs, including the UC Education Abroad Program (UCEAP), the Faculty-led Education Abroad Program (FLEAP), and third-party programs (Opportunities Abroad Program -OAP). The Assistant Director will provide expertise on UC Education Abroad Program (UCEAP) student support services, such as helping students identify appropriate UCEAP programs based on their interests and/or areas of study, navigate financial aid policies and procedures, and apply for internal and extramural scholarships. In addition, this position will collaborate with Education Abroad staff to lead information sessions, provide pre-departure and re-entry activities for UCR students, support during crisis situations, and event planning and management (e.g., Fall and Winter WorldFest, International Education Week). Particularly, the Assistant Director is expected to provide additional expertise on the UCR Faculty-led Education Abroad Program (FLEAP), including: managing all student FLEAP applications and files, the collection of confidential student information; recruitment (information sessions, campus-wide tabling events, classroom presentations, etc.); program promotional efforts (design digital and print collateral materials); facilitate as liaison with UCR Faculty, Financial Aid, the Registrar's Office and Student Business Services; edit, revise, and update FLEAP forms and processes; update and manage FLEAP website content and education abroad student information systems; and provide input on FLEAP program development and strategic planning. Additionally, the Assistant Director certifies student scholarship applications (i.e. UCEAP Promise Awards, Gilman, Freeman Asia and Fund for Education Abroad), attends and assists Lessons from Abroad Returnee Conference for San Diego and Los Angeles, attends at least one professional development conference per year, and attends at least one site-visit per year.

  • Develop and implement evaluation methods to collect relevant data, generate reports and inform program and service development. Manage design and coordination of workshops, information sessions, and special events (e.g. Worldfest Study Abroad Fair, International Education Week) for program abroad in collaboration with overall Study Abroad Programs. Assesses appropriate needs of students, and refers students to specific student programs.
  • Using current theory and industry best practices, inform and design pre-departure orientations and sessions to increase participation in and preparation for study abroad programs. Develop goals and measurable outcomes to define the success of each program. Screen applications by assessing the overall record, including GPA, recommendation letters, self-statement, etc. Identify applicants, using qualitative analysis of the cases, knowledge of requirements and past decisions. Advise students.

Work closely with department staff to establish budget priorities that are consistent with campus, division and departmental goals and objectives. Ensure that proper fiscal controls are established and maintained, and manage funds in compliance with campus, divisional, departmental and program goals and objectives. Interpret and apply university policies to ensure appropriate use of funds. Research, recommend and (upon approval) develop new sources of grant funding and scholarships to augment resources available to students, departments and to fund new initiatives that promote campus internalization goals. Supervises and directs the activities of student employees or volunteers, including hiring, evaluating performance, assigning work, recommending annual merit increases, recommending reclassification, initiating disciplinary actions, and resolving complaints/grievances.
