Custom Scope
Using skills as a seasoned, experienced student services professional, provides the full range of student services within an organization such as an academic department, school, or college. Independently advises students and resolves student services-related issues on the full range of academic issues inherent within the organization. Advises faculty and management on a variety of student issues. Works with the department's/school's/college's management to recommend changes to policies, practices, and procedures. Guidance on issues requiring in-depth knowledge of specialized programs is provided by offices specializing in those fields, e.g., the financial aid office, graduate division, or student learning center, OR by the chair/dean and faculty of the department/school/college. May administer funds for student programs.

Department Custom Scope
Under general supervision of the Director of Global Recruitment and Admissions, the Senior International Student Advisor serves as the primary advisor regarding policies pertaining to the international student population at UCR University Extension. The advisor maintains accurate and complete student records as required by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Department of State (DOS), and Department of Education (DOE); communicates with students and staff regarding federal regulations as they pertain to program participants and institutional policies; develops and implements resources, materials, and presentations to effectively provide information to students and exchange visitors regarding relevant rules and regulations for F-1, B1/B2, visa waiver, and J-1 visa holders throughout their participation in programs; stays current with federal regulations and guidance through participation in government webinars, NAFSA forums, and conferences; counsels students regarding nonimmigrant status issues including nonimmigrant documents, school transfer, program change/extension, travel, termination, and withdrawal; Serves as primary contact for international students who need assistance with matters affecting their immigration, including personal, social or behavioral. Provides crisis intervention to students and exchange visitors when academic, attendance, or behavioral issues may affect status. Assists with other student and student life advisor functions as needed and supports orientation and programming efforts in the areas of immigration, acculturation, student life, academics and career.

Applying professional student services concepts, provides the full range of student services to student population served by the organization.
  • Serves as Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) for UCR Extension J-1 exchange visitor programs and Designated School Official (DSO) for F-1 student programs. Maintains Student Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) and internal student records as required by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Department of State (DOS), and internal policy. Advises program participants and staff about rules, regulations and procedures in relation to maintenance of F-1, J-1, and B1/B2 non-immigrant status.

Recruitment and Admissions: Plans and implements outreach programs with specifically targeted institutions; advises prospective applicants on necessary academic preparation; appropriateness of program as it pertains to the prospective applicant's goals; utilizing in-depth knowledge of the organization's admissions criteria, helps rank applicants for admissions; evaluates domestic and international transcripts for degree eligibility; initiates and arranges student recruitment visits.
  • This includes applicant and pre-arrival information and processes, returning and new student registrations, issuance of DS-2019 and I-20 forms, program extensions, transfers, personal/financial updates, educational level changes, site of activity updates, travel authorization, practical training, terminations, reduced course loads, etc. It is the advisor's responsibility to make sure that all institutional policies and practices are in accordance with federal rules as required by DHS and DOS.

Student Orientation: Oversees and may conduct orientations of new students.
  • Develops and presents orientations, workshops, and additional materials, as needed, such as newsletters, flyers, and forms.

Plans, designs, and provides workshops for students, such as information about the organization, or academic strategies and enrichment programs.
  • The advisor creates and implements resources, materials and presentations to effectively communicate relevant nonimmigrant information to students and staff. This includes the maintenance of nonimmigrant status, OPT and CPT eligibility and processes, and other procedure and policy as relate to nonimmigrant students.

Academic Advising: Advises faculty on departmental/school/college and university policies and procedures; reviews students' progress and advises students and faculty on requirements for degree/program completion; identifies students with progression problems and recommends interventions; devises curriculum planning in collaboration with chair/ dean and faculty, and with other departments.

Career Counseling: Advises department/college/school students on the job market process, and the standards and norms specific to the student's field of study; advises on summer internship programs; develops and maintains network of departments and regional firms interested in hiring summer students.
  • Collaborates with internship placement partner in advising of CPT and OPT opportunities for students where available. Provides workshops and individual advising on policy and procedure as relate to nonimmigrant employment benefits. Tracks and communicates employment data for nonimmigrant students to the organization.
