Generic Scope

Custom Scope
Reports through Police Chain of Command. Provides management for one or more department units or divisions. The police department is a 24 hours a day, 7 days a week operation. Receives assignments in the form of objectives and determines how to use resources to meet schedules and goals. Reviews and approves recommendations for functional programs. Provides guidance to subordinates to achieve goals in accordance with established policies. Erroneous decisions or failure to achieve goals results in additional costs and personnel. |
Department Custom Scope
Under the general direction of the Director of Campus Safety Services (Chief of Police), the Police Lieutenant is responsible for managing, directing, and planning the daily operations and long-range goals of their units. The incumbent has a critical role in the University of California Police Department as a Patrol and/or Operations Lieutenant and provides oversight and supervision to units and programs including, but not limited to: patrol, traffic, communications, special events, UNET, Community Service Officers, investigations, and crime prevention. The incumbent may act for the Director of Campus Safety Services (Chief of Police) in their absence and is responsible for all functions/tasks appropriate to the classification. |

Serves as the functional manager or supervisor for other department employees of lower rank or classification in the absence of the normally designated manager or supervisor. Provides necessary command and control for the department and/or the campus in the absence of a ranking officer or other officials or authorities. Assists the Police Captain and other command staff in the development of policy, budget and other planning for the department.
