Department Custom Scope
Under the general direction of the Director for Residential Life, the Associate Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) is a part of the Residential Life leadership team but also serves as a resource and colleague to those departments within Auxiliary Services (such as Housing Services and Dining & Hospitality Services). This position has primary responsibility for the development, coordination, and facilitation of programs, trainings, resources, and advocacy dedicated to student and staff diversity, inclusion, belonging, and equity. The Associate Director will serve as a visible leader in the community with the authority to envision, strategize, advocate, implement, and document processes, initiatives, and measurable actions leading to greater DEI at UCR; specifically, within the on-campus resident community. This position works both independently and collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to foster a safe, supportive, and responsive environment grounded in the value of DEI.

Administers an extensive public service program identifying suitable public service agencies; working with outside agencies to develop large-scale programs to work in public service roles; creating visibility for the public service center of the organization. Provides education, training and reflection opportunities to students engaged in public service.
  • Planning, managing, and assisting with implementation of DEI education and training for staff and students. Coordinate large-scale programmatic efforts.

Independently resolves the most complex individual cases regarding student affairs or student life issues.
  • Provides leadership for diversity initiatives, normalizing the development and attainment of DEI goals and adopting strategic improvements. Act as an advisor and mentor to underrepresented students.

May provide strategic vision and oversight on development of program design and applicability. Measures, assesses, and evaluates programs and staff.
  • Transforming and strengthening current policies, procedures, and structures to promote accountability, oversight, and transparency, and foster a culture that actively identifies and addressed DEI barriers. Maintain current on issues of DEI within the UCR community and within the larger context of impact on the student body.

  • Develop, implement, and facilitate DEI competency development program for both student leader staff and residents. Develop, implement, and facilitate programs and initiatives to increase the sense of belonging for underrepresented residents.

Develops and maintains complex or sensitive relationships with external organizations critical to program success. Represents the organizations to UC, the local community, and other relevant audiences.
  • Forge strong collaborative partnerships with multiple departments across campus; including but not limited to Campus Diversity, Equity, Inclusion office, African Student Programs, Asian Pacific Student Programs, Chicano Student Programs, LGBT Resource Center, Middle Eastern Student Center, Native American Student Programs, Foster Youth Support Services, Student Disability Resource Center, Undocumented Student programs, Veterans Center, and Women?s Resource Center. - Assist in the management of services and programs designed to increase retention, matriculation, and graduation of a diverse population. - Represent the department on campus committees and working groups specific to DEI.

Manages a program of providing counseling, guidance and development to student leaders or student government. Oversee(s) a program(s) and service(s) of diverse complexity and scope.

Directs the adjudication process for student conduct cases OR manages individual cases of the highest complexity and sensitivity. Interviews witnesses and writes up findings regarding alleged conduct violations. Makes recommendations for sanctions. Serves as expert resource for lower level staff.
  • Work with the campus to follow-up and/or investigate hate bias reports within the on-campus community.

Oversees multiple business services and may supervise business coordinators. Defines criteria for service and assesses risk/benefit, balances financial and cost considerations against the degree of students served. Provides guidance for new services and advises students on development of business plans. Responsible for long range planning and development and new initiatives.
  • Serve as chair for the Residential Life Social Justice Task Force to gain insight and assess needs while working collaboratively to enhance the staff and student experience.
